A gold disc, probably part of a late Post Medieval or Modern collar stud or similar dress fitting, dating from AD 1850 - 2000. It is a shallowly domed disc with no decoration. The reverse is concave and is partially covered with a black coating, perhaps an adhesive as there is no other evidence of attachment. There is a flange round the edge which is flatter and uncoated. The disc would probably have been attached to a central shaft terminating in a smaller domed disc which would have sat against the neck after being threaded though a collar.  Measurements are; diameter 10.8mm, th…

A Modern collar button, shirt stud or cufflink dating from about AD 1700 - 2000. It is a silver setting with a cabochon gem, probably green onyx. The yellow green gem is domed, and is oval in plan. It is set in a band of silver with eight vertical thickened ribs. An engraved line round the base of the setting divides the side from the back of the front component. Incomplete late Victorian copper alloy dress lifter. Dress lifters were used to prevent long dresses from trailing in the mud by hoisting the skirt up. A chain attachment to the item would allow the wearer to lift her skirts up and down without having to bend. This example is in the form of a horseshoe with a screw-thread clamp and is possibly an example of Fyfe's ABC Patent 1876 Horse Shoe Skirt Lifter. Dated c.1870-1900.

Copper alloy object, initially identified as a furniture escutcheon. However, Chris Richter of Germany kindly identified this object as a women's corset fitting of more recent date, of a type that remains in use today. He provides the following visual reference to an image of such objects 'in action', at: http://www.neheleniapatterns.com/loeffelschliessen.jpg. The fasteners are placed on the rigid front of the corset (the busk) and enable it to be removed without full unlacing. The opening busk came into use in the middle of the 19th century, and continues in various contexts to the …

Dress fastener of the type known as a 'cloak-clasp'. It is made of copper alloy with traces of a yellow-metal coating, and has an oval plate decorated with a relief lion's head. When held so that the lion's head is upright, the long axis of the oval is vertical. There is a rectangular loop to the right and a circular loop to the left; the circular loop is perpendicular to the rest of the object. The rectangular loop would have been sewn to one side of the garment, and an identical piece would have been sewn to the other side. One side would have had a short chain ending in a hook,…
