An incomplete copper alloy dress fastener of the post medieval period, c. AD 1550-1700.
Only the plate and loop survive, the pin and hook are missing. The plate is triangular in shape, with a pinked border, and the flattened loop has now pressed backwards through the plate, creating rectangular apertures. The same post depositional phenomenon is probably responsible for the further rectangular aperture at the base, where the hook would have been attached. A further small aperture may be from a further plate with a decorative design, as in DEV-8DB122. There is gilding surviving o…

A complete Post Medieval copper-alloy dress fastener dating to circa AD 1600-1800. It consists of an oval shaped rounded body, which is circular in section. Emerging from the top of the body is a shaft with rounded edges which terminates in in a pair of adjacent loops.
The date and function of this object is debated interpreted as either a Post Medieval clothing toggle or a potentially a Late Iron Age to Roman cosmetic pestle but it is more likely that were toggles from Post Medieval garments. A number of examples are recorded on the PAS including SF-6E4BF6; SWYOR-1DEB94; SWYOR-1…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy dress fastener of probable post medieval date (c.1550-1700).
Description: The body is sub-oval in form and flat, 1.9mm thickness, with old breaks at either end. There are two attachment loops on either side surmounted by small finials (there would probably have been a third attachment loop at the base, now missing). At the top, the old break would suggest the start of a narrowed arm projecting from the body, so presumably a missing hook as opposed to a rectangular strap loop, as is often seen on this type of fastener. The face depicts an expanding …

A post medieval copper alloy wire blunt hooked clasp of Read's Class A, Type 1, dating from AD 1500 - 1900. The clasp is made from a single piece of heavy gauge wire, which has been bent back on itself to form a hook and has its ends curled into a pair of flanking attachment loops. It has a dark green patina. This form was used until modern times, but the patination suggests an earlier date. Compare with SUR-3488DA and Read (2008) page 155 - 156.

The object is triangular in shape, although the three angles of the triangle are rounded. A Post Medieval copper alloy wire-work hook dating from the 16th century. The hook is constructed from five lengths of wire bound together in the centre by finer gauge wire. The ends of four wire lengths are decoratively splayed and then coiled. The two outer wire-lengths on the opposing ends are also splayed and coiled and the central three stands are bent over and flattened to form a hook. Two of the ends are curled over to form loops and the third is cut and fed through the other two loops to secure it. The shape of the artefact is slightly distorted. A similar hook was described a…
