An incomplete copper-alloy Spanish coin of the 17th century, probably a Spanish colonial 8 Maravedis Cob coin. The coin has been restruck on one side, reading XX[...]. It is probably a 'resellado' (which means 'resealed' or 'restruck'). As a parallel record (SOM-04B156) states: these are often called 'cob' coins after the Spanish word for copper which is 'cobre': they were crudely made in Spain initially and later in the Americas for use in the Spanish colonies. Copper alloy Spanish four maravedis, on one side a IIII and two H puncheons, and on the other a small 6, three H puncheons and 1655, weight 3.63g, the usual very crude appearance, dated 1655. This coin is another example of foreign coins being pressed into service in 17th century England with its continuous shortage of small change.
