Base copper alloy forgery of a penny of Henry III, voided long cross class 3 imitation with garbled legends, no plating apparent so presumably the original colour of this coin would have been closer to the silver of an official penny, 0.92g, c.1248-77

A copper alloy contemporary forgery of a Medieval voided long cross cut halfpenny of Henry III, of class IVa-V dating to 1250-1272. The moneyer and mint are unclear. The obverse has a portrait with sceptre, the reverse lettering is retrograde. The coin was presumably originally silver plated or washed, but this coating has not survived.

Silver penny of Alexander III of Scotland, voided long cross type, moneyer Walter of uncertain mint, weight 1.09g, 1250-80. Nick Holmes adds: This is a rather peculiar coin, I’m afraid, and even after playing around with the images on Photoshop to increase the contrast, I still can’t read much of the inscriptions. I can see why Martin wanted to pass on the query! Yes – the reverse does appear to read WA/LTE/RO ..., but unfortunately the mint name is quite illegible. The name Walter is found on coins of the mints of DUN, FRES, Glasgow, Kinghorn and Montrose, so this is no he…

Henry 3rd, Spink 1374, c.1251-1272, Canterbury mint. A voided long cross halfpenny, possibly a forgery. This coin is crumpled, as if hit in the centre before deposition. There is severe wear on the obverse face that has destroyed most of the bust, as well as partial wear on the reverse face that is concentrated in one section. The obverse face features a bust with sceptre and the remains of an inscription, which reads HEN...III. The reverse face features a voided long cross with three pellets in each quarter, surrounded by an inscription that reads: ROB...ONC ANT.

Forgery, probably contemporary, of a silver hammered voided long cross penny of Henry III (1216-1272), with crude imitation of facing portrait on obverse and voided long cross with pellets on the reverse. The legends are illegible both from wear and due to blundering. The flan is copper alloy with a silver wash. Likely mid 13th century.

An incomplete copper-alloy cored (silver plated) forgery of a class 3b hammered penny struck under Henry III, dating c. 1249-1250. The coin combines a well-executed copy of a class 3b obverse with the reverse of an Irish issue penny struck by Ricard at the mint of Dublin. Part of the coin has broken away, reveal copper-alloy corrosion products consistent with being base-metal cored.

A medieval cut farthing of Henry II (1154-89), mint uncertain but perhaps London with the moneyer's name ending with an R, suggesting it could be class 1ab or 1b. If London, the moneyer would be Aimer or Osber. Henry II class 1 coins date to 1180-9. The coin appears silvered and thus may be a contemporary forgery. Reference: cf. North 962/1, 963
