An incomplete silver and copper alloy early medieval disc brooch, dating to the 9th century, c. AD 800-900. The elaborately decorated front plate of the brooch survives, but the pin is missing and was not recovered in the ensuing excavation of the findspot. There is some damage to the copper alloy backing of the silver, and a small area appears as openwork due to the absence of the backing in this area. In this area, two of the dome headed riveted bosses which are part of the decorative scheme, are also missing. It is circular in plan and flattened in cross section. The majority of th…

Copper-alloy brooch of 'cogwheel' type. It is circular and openwork, 30.2mm in diameter, and has a central convex lozenge surrounded by a groove. Beyond the groove are four slightly curved relief lines, one along each side of the lozenge, with each line ending in a flat disc. There are thus two flat discs at either corner of the lozenge, forming a cross shape. The ends of the cross are joined by a ring of copper alloy, leaving four roughly D-shaped holes in the brooch. A groove runs around the centre of the outer ring, and the exterior is shaped into 18 teeth, small rectangular projec…

Copper alloy disc brooch. Cast plate brooch, probably Weetch Type 18, comprising a central circular panel or cell, hollow behind and standing proud, retaining the darker blue enamel ground of a possibly polychrome and possibly cruciform motif, now perhaps crazed by impact, whether recent or ancient is uncertain. A flat rim of width 3.4mm with a possibly cabled edge surrounds the upstanding wall of the central cell. An opposed pin seat and the stub of a pin rest appear on the back, both being brazed to the outermost edge of the rim. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-900 Diameter…
