Copper alloy disc brooch. Cast circular flat plate with an off-centre large ring and dot of diameter 1.8mm with a border of fifteen smaller [diameter 2.5mm] ring and dot at its outer edge. The triangular stub of either a catch plate or pin seat appears on the back. This sort of brooch is infrequently reported in our area, though a Roman version was recently reported from Low Burnham in the Isle of Axholme. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600 Diameter: 25.1mm, Thickness (clear of pin gear): 2.2mm, Weight: 5.54gms

Copper alloy disc brooch. Cast plate brooch, probably Weetch Type 18, comprising a central circular panel or cell, hollow behind and standing proud, retaining the darker blue enamel ground of a possibly polychrome and possibly cruciform motif, now perhaps crazed by impact, whether recent or ancient is uncertain. A flat rim of width 3.4mm with a possibly cabled edge surrounds the upstanding wall of the central cell. An opposed pin seat and the stub of a pin rest appear on the back, both being brazed to the outermost edge of the rim. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-900 Diameter…

Lead disc brooch. Cast plate with five moulded bosses on its display face, each bordered by a low gutter, and probably forming part of a cross arrangement, possibly with the peripheral bosses in the angles of the cross. An outer border appears, possibly billeted. A thick folded lug on the back is probably a catch plate though there is no sign of a distinct pin seat; it at all events related to fastening. Patinated and lightly bent. This appears to be a later brooch, with a border possibly recalling Borre style ornamentation, and is an example of the cheaper brooches worn by the l…

Copper alloy cruciform brooch. Two fragments from the same cruciform brooch - damage has removed the bow between head plate and foot, though the metal appears identical and the same circular stamp has been used to decorate both. A rectangular plate bears three integrally cast and flat-backed knobs. The top knob bears a moulded base, tapered body and sports a fan-shaped terminal whose edges are decorated with a series of circular punch marks of diameter 1.4mm. The side knobs matched, but both are very heavily worn and their terminals reduced to polished stubs. The head plate bears the …

Copper alloy brooch. Disc brooch. Hollow brooch, apparently cast in one piece, with a central bordered boss surrounded by three concentric rings in relief and twelve semicircular hollows, also with edges modelled in relief. A low outer rim resembles a back plate, though it is probably not a separate piece. Two torn apertures on the back of the brooch appear to mark the loss of a hinged pin and its catch plate. The design resembles that of a Roman disc brooch; a comparable design is presented by Mackreth (2011, plate 105 no. 13239) among others dated to the late 2nd to 3rd century AD, …

Copper alloy and silver Brooch. Disc Brooch. Slightly concavo-convex silver disc decorated with five circular compartments of interlocking compass-drawn decoration, attached by four silver rivets of diameter 1.4mm and length 2.5mm to a similarly concavo-convex cast copper alloy disc. Each strand of interlace bears an off-centre incised line, probably to emphasise its course; the rivets are sunk between these lines where they intersect. A central countersunk hole of about 2mm diameter appears integral to the facing, and perhaps to both elements. Diagonal tooling or polishing marks ap…

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon jewelled disc brooch. The surviving quarter panel of the flat circular brooch is decorated with a gilded Style II animal design. The interlacing animal has horizontal ribs on the ribbon-like body. His snake-like head is on the top right of the panel though it is now quite worn. On either side of the decorated panel is an incomplete plain field with an empty circular setting near the outer edge of the brooch. There are also the remains of a central circular setting, though most of this does not survive. The back of the brooch has an integ…

A silver-gilt fragment, possibly from a late Anglo-Saxon disc brooch. The fragment can be read as part of an animal with only the front leg, shoulder and curve at the junction of the neck and back remaining. A strand of interlace can be seen running behind the possible raised front leg which ends against a simple frame. The animal is rendered freely in a style reminiscent of the chip carving of the early Anglo Saxon period. All edges apart from the one delineating the lower part of the neck and back are torn. The width of the fragment is 15mm.

Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon lead disc brooch. Less than half survives. The drawing shows decoration of three rings of small pellets, around a concentric ridge, then a gap between these borders and the central motif. The central motif starts with a further ring of small pellets, around a cross motif made up of two strands of smaller, more closely spaced pellets. One arm of the cross survives and there appears to be infill between the arms of more pellets including perhaps a single larger one in the centre of the best-surviving quarter.

Anglo-Saxon disc shaped brooch with raised centre, radiating groups of lines and ring-dots. Good traces of silvering. 2 attachments on back. This brooch was identified by Rosie Weetch as an example of her Type 24, a type of lead-alloy brooch which is normally found in London, with several from the Cheapside Hoard. It is perhaps closer to her Type 14, as it is made from copper alloy and has no peripheral bosses. It was originally recorded as 6th century, but both Type 14 and Type 24 date to the 11th century.
