Incomplete post-medieval copper alloy hooked book clasp, the flaring proximal end missing, the break across the presumed mid-point with remains of a large perforated ring-and-dot.  The sides taper gently towards the hook immediately before which there there are lateral projections decorated with engraved transverse rocker-arm between fine engraved lines. A copper alloy rivet lies close by within a transverse band of short longitudinal engraved lines, and attaches the remains of a narrowed plate to the reverse. Extant length 33mm. Width 20.5mm. 16th century.

A near complete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper-alloy book clasp or strap fitting dating c. AD 1400-1600. The clasp is made from a single sheet of metal with one end flared and scalloped, and a hook at the opposite end projecting from rounded shoulders. Two circular-sectioned rivets with flattened heads perforate the centre of the plate. Both rivets are broken on the underside. Neither the upper surface or underside of the plate are decorated. A copper alloy book or strap fitting, probably post medieval (c. AD 1550 - 1800). It comprises a rectangular plate with a plano-convex section, this steps down to an asympetical pointed tip. The reverse has two laterally placed attachment studs, both intact except for the points, both bent outwards. These attachment studs appear to have been soldered in place. Length 44 mm, width 18 mm, thickness 2 mm and weight 9.5 g.

A Medieval pierced and decorated book clasp fitting of Howsam Type A.7. The clasp is formed of two rectangular plates attached to each other by four copper alloy rivets rivets and both perforated centrally to fit over a matching pegged fitting. The front plate is decorated with cusped bipartite ends with small flanking lobes and an incised saltire cross of lines running from each corner to the central perforation. The rear plate is undecorated.

A heavily corroded copper alloy book clasp. This example is rectangular in plan with an expanded butt; the forward edge has a narrowed tab that has been bent around to form a hook. There is a rivet hole at the front and a second at the rear, the latter still retains its copper alloy rivet, which has a decorated rose shaped head. Artefacts such as this have been discovered during excavation in York which dated to the 15th and 16th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)

A post Medieval copper alloy book clasp, 36.7mm in length and of Howsam type A.3 (hooked fishtail). The clasp has a flat hook at one end and a flared terminal at the other, with a waved edge. In front of this is a rivet with an octofoil floral head. The other end has a panel of incised parallel lines and a rectangular terminal with oblique pairs of incised lines across it, from which the blunt hook projects. This panel has a second rivet hole which retains a copper alloy rivet. Copper alloy book fitting.  The flared posterior end is decorated on the upper surface by an impressed circular motif pierced by four holes, and a ring and dot motif near the anterior end, which has  a downward facing flattened hook.  a single copper alloy rivet extends from the rear face below the ring and dot motif.   The object is in fair but incomplete condition, is 44mm long, 19mm wide, 4mm thick and weighs 3.90g.

The clasp is 40mm in length with a diamond shaped plate with transverse projecting rectangular lobes at either end.
