Copper alloy mount. Cast markedly concavo-convex hollow mask in the form of a maned lion’s head. The nose and jowls are naturalistically rendered, the eyes are represented by protruding oval panels and an oval aperture – whether arising from mis-casting, damage or design – is an open oval hole. The former option is perhaps most likely as another gap appears at the top of the head. An outwardly bevelled rim represents the mane. Possibly from furniture or from a container used to contain a cremation. The lion was persistently linked with death in the Mediterranean world…

It is broadly oval in shape with three-dimensional bust depiction on the front and an undecorated flat surface on the reverse. Large Roman copper-alloy mount with integral rivet. The front is conical and the sides are slightly concave in side view, and rise from a circular edge 25mm in diameter to a rounded point. The reverse is hollow, and the integral rivet projects from the centre. Its circular-section shaft is 4.6mm in minimum diameter and ends in a large integrally cast disc 12mm in diameter. The object is 16mm in total height with the front and the rivet each making up about half of this. It has a pale green surface and weighs 8.7g.  The integral rivet with large flat rove is characterist…

A heavily worn and corroded copper alloy anthropomorphic mount dating to the Roman period, AD 43 - 410, in the form of a human face. The object is oval in plan, convex at the front and concave at the rear. Hair is shown on the top of the head and bordering the sides of the face to the chin, but unfortunately all finer detail had been removed by corrosion leaving a heavily pitted surface. An inlayed silver band runs around the top of the head and is split in the middle with each end stopping in a roundel terminal (only one side of which survives) a third silver line runs perpendicular f…

A fragment of a copper-alloy, openwork, cast Roman mount of the 'trompetenmuster' style. The style dates to the second and third centuries AD, and is a common feature in Roman metalwork. The mount would have likely been rectangular in plan, when complete, with four adjoining trumpet motifs of which one survives, with part of another. The reverse is flat and the front is bevelled. The object is 28.5mm long, 14.8mm wide, 3.1mm thick and weighs 2.89g. SUSS-03D78D is a close parallel for this fragment. It could also be part of a fob dangler of Iron Age date, similar to&n…

A circular mount, probably of the Roman period. It is made from copper alloy, and curves into a hemispherical dome, at the rear of which is the remains of a stud by which it was fixed. It is decorated on the face with concentric circles around a central raised circle. Although there is no discernable trace of enamel, it is likely that some of the inscribed circles had millefiori enamel inlaid, as this is a feature of these objects, and there is evidence of some highly corroded material. The finder notes that it is similar to one found at the Roman bath house excavation in Car…

The underside surface of the object is flat, but undulates to follow the contours of the bird. Fragmentary copper alloy belt mount from a Late Roman military suite. It takes the form of a disc, much damaged around the edges, with a central hole for a now missing rivet surround by several concentric circles, one composed of pellets. The edge was probably decorated with a final outer circle composed of zigzags. This was surely a part of a mount similar to complete objects described as disc attachments with suspension loops from graves in Dorchester and Milton-next-Sittingbourne (Hawkes and Dunning 1961, p.2.5-9 and p.4b-c).
