Copper alloy wheel. Cast round section ring with the stubs of six lentoid section spokes projecting internally. Two of the spikes are probably over 50% present, two are only short stubs and the remaining one is probably 25% surviving. The wheel has a rim around it on both sides, which is flat around the perimeter and extends beyond the inner ring from which the spokes extend, possibly in a representation of an iron tyre. The spokes are flared in a semi circle at the point at which they join the rim. The wheel is associated with the cult of Taranis as an attribute of a god of …

Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel with four spokes; one pair forming a continuous line across a central hub, and the other pair forming an S-shaped curve, all within a D-section rim. Both straight and curving spokes bear a ridge or rib upstanding on one side, with the central boss or hub slightly protruding above them. These details are absent on the other side, which is flat except for the more marked projection of a central round-section hub. Though this projects further than that on the display side, it is too short to permit use as a spinning toy or whirligig. The wheel was an attribu…

An incomplete copper alloy wheel dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1700-1900). The object is circular in plan and the rim is ovial in section. the remains of four out of six evenly spaced spokes are apparent. The object is undecorated and has a reddish green patina. Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database include LVPL-DBF285, ESS-3B37F6 and NLM-B563BC and suggest the object may have been attached to a toy cannon or vehicle. The overall dimensions are as follows: 56.54mm in diameter, 6.13mm in thickness and 60.15g in weight.

Copper alloy and iron probable pastry cutter or jigger fragment. A cast baluster-shaped flat-sided plate with the corroded relict of a ferrous metal cog or cutting wheel [now of diameter 20.4mm and formerly of at least 25mm] attached on a round lug. Rust stains on the adjacent part of the copper alloy plate may hint at the loss of a further cog from a gear system. A cast copper alloy wheel, probably post medieval in date (c.AD 1700-1900). The object is circular with flat sides and the remains of four equidistantly positioned spokes that would have connected into the centre, forming a cross. The spokes are now missing with just the stubs of three and most of a fourth visible. As the spokes are missing, it is impossible to know whether the object attached to another in order to function as a wheel. It is nevertheless possible that it functioned as part of a toy carriage or wheeled cannon. For comparative examples, see: NLM-B563BC and ES…

Copper alloy wheel. Solid cast wheel with a central hub separated from a curved rim by an infill of grey cement-like material which adheres here and elsewhere. The reverse of the wheel has a stepped projection, possibly an integral axle or an element to engage with one, with a minimum or terminal diameter of 19.7mm, where it is rounded or burred. Copper alloy wheel. Probably die-stamped drive wheel from a clockwork toy steam engine, with ten spokes of plano-convex section radiating from a broad central thickened hub to a flanged rim, and with a socket for a drive shaft set abutting the hub between two of the spokes. Iron staining on the back suggests the wheel was formerly mounted on a steel axle. Probably modelled at a scale of 1:32 or 54mm. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950. Lead alloy wheel. Cast flanged wheel with nine spokes radiating between its hub and rim. Probably from a toy train, possibly modelled at O Gauge or a scale of c.1:32. Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel with a hub occupied by two concentric rings of pellets around a central pellet, and with twelve waisted spokes joining it to a rim with closely-spaced pellets adjacent to its outer edge. This detail does not appear on the slightly hollowed reverse. Rust staining and a central scar on the back of the hub may suggest loss of either an axle or an iron fixing pin. The finder considers this likely to be a decorative bridle boss, while this reporter would suggest this may be detached from a toy gun or vehicle; the dating would be similar in either event. Now b…

Copper alloy wheel. Cast round section ring with the stubs of six lentoid section spokes of width c.3.5mm and thickness c.2.5mm projecting from an internal mould line. The mass of the object suggests it to be solid. The wheel is associated with the cult of Taranis as an attribute of a god of thunder or the sky. An earlier association with the solar disc is also suspected, dating back to the Bronze Age, and finds echoes in Classical mythology. This example is larger than others viewed by this reporter, and had more spokes than the smaller versions. A fine finish to this simple object i…

Copper alloy and iron wheel, Cast wheel with four equidistantly spaced spokes with slightly concave sides, and with the stub of an iron axle remaining at its centre. Traces of untrimmed casting flash remain between the inside of the rim and the sides of the spokes. The finder originally considered this to be part of a toy vehicle of recent date. A suggestion of an identification as a votive object was then canvassed by this reporter. Craig Cook corrects this, with reference to the advice of Ben Paites, FLO for Essex. Ben kindly suggests that the provision of an axle distinguishes this…

Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel withfour oval spokes, each dished in the middle as is the hub where they meet, and a plain probably rectangular section rim of width 3.4mm, of which one quarter is lost. A solid conical axle of length 9mm projects from the back of the hub. The five dished areas may all have been intended to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant now remains. The wheel was a symbol associated with Iron Age cults such as that of Taranis. Suggested date: Late Iron Age to Early Roman, 100 BC-AD100. Possible cast copper alloy mechanism part? Semi-circular disc of thick rough metal; half of the disc is broken away. On one face there is a short central projecting cylindrical stub which has been cast as one with the disc. The base of the stub sits on a small flat raised circular platform or border. This was surrounded by a ring of possibly four(?) circular perforations of which only two survive. Towards the outer edge of the disc face there is a shallow recessed circle. There is no other detail visible on this face of the object. However, on the opposite face there is a prominent ra…

Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel with four thin spokes expanding at their inner ends to form a rhomboid hub. Lead and iron wheel. Cast rouletting wheel with a central axle hole of diameter c.2mm, comprising a cylindrical lead drum studded with six offset pairs of iron pins set so as to produce a regular series of depressions when rolled across a surface. The drum may have a larger diameter on one side than the other - a point only discerned when preparing the image of the object, which if correct would have caused it to describe a circle when in use. Each side has a circular patch around the hole where a handle would have retained the axle. This might have served for the preparation of paper…

Copper alloy Wheel. Probably pressed metal flanged wheel with three round apertures and a lug, probably one half of a two-part pulley wheel. The flange has opposed spurs probably relating to its function; the hub of the wheel projects externally and is dimpled within, it was probably gripped externally by paired brackets.
