A lead weight of uncertain date, ranging from the Roman to post-medieval periods (c. 43-1800 AD). The weight is broadly sub-cylindrical in form and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section, tapering slightly from its base to its top. The base of the weight is slightly indented, and on its flat top is a deep cut-mark probably relating to post-depositional damage. The weight is in relatively good condition, with an even patina covering all of its surfaces. The object is c. 22mm wide at its top, c. 26mm wide at its base, stands 19.48mm high and weighs 123.4g. Undecorated lead weights such as …

A lead fabric weight with an indentation in the centre of the front, which contains two holes, one either side of a central ridge. Around the indentation a decorative linear pattern has been etched into the surface: a circle formed of short diagonal grooves. Both the front and back surfaces of the object are pitted and scratched. The weight measures 31.7mm x 32.6mm, is 3.3mm deep and weighs 27g. The indentation measures 9mm in diameter. This object can be compared with SUSS-4D4421 on this database, which has similar decoration. These weights were and are used to weigh down the he…

A 17th-century post-medieval copper-alloy trade weight of Charles I or Charles II, seemingly for a two ounce weight, now 11% underweight. It has the following verification marks: - Crown over C* - the royal cypher (11 o'clock) - The sword of St Paul - the City of London Guildhall mark (12 o'clock) - 'A' for Averdepois - the trade weight system (1 o'clock) - Ewer - The London Founders' Company mark (6 o'clock) * The letter is not completely certain, but appears to be a 'C' rather than a 'G'. The style and relatively small size of the crown above it is also consistent with an attribu…

A pyramid-shaped fishing or trading lead weight, perhaps late medieval or early post-medieval (c. 1300-c. 1600 AD). The weight is topped by a loop of lead creating a hole where something could be passed through it, either for hanging or moving the weight. The straight sides then flare to a flat rectangular base. Its patina is white, suggesting it has some age to it. The base of the weight is 13mm by 15.44mm, it is 21.39mm in height and weighs 19.54g. These weights and sizes do not convert directly to imperial sizes, but wear of the object might account for the difference.

Sub-circular lead fabric weight. There is a shallow 9.17mm diameter circular recess on one face, within which are two circular holes that pierce through the disc. Despite looking like a button, these weights were and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Examples can be seen on page 83 of Bailey's (2004) Buttons and Fasteners. They seem to come into use perhaps in the eighteenth century, and are still available to buy today. Diameter: 25.48mm Thickness: 2.98mm, Weight: 13.7gms

A tall, triangular lead weight, possibly dating from the Roman to Post Medieval periods but essentially undatable. The weight is complete and undecorated with a grey colour. It is thick and flat, and has iron blocking a hole through the apex, probably the remains of an iron suspension loop. The weight measures 49.43mm high, 41.69mm wide at the base, and is 8.47mm thick. It weighs 116.4 grams. These weights are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been fishing weights dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of context this weight must rem…

Weight. Cast circular disc with notches. (No image available.) Weight 9.04g (other dimensions not recorded). (Report by Susan M. Youngs, formerly British Museum). This object is most similar to weight 11 from Gilton, Kent, Grave 66 (Scull 1990, fig. 2), one of the few weight-sets to have been found in grave. When found individually, such things can be impossible to identify reliably (Hinton 2000, 63-6 and 111-2); in this case, the notches enabled the identification to be made. At 9.04 g, the disc is within a reasonable tolerance of seven times a unit of 1.3 g, based on Merovingi…
