Late Medieval to Post Medieval c. AD 1450-1700, uniface, lead token or weight, one face bears, in relief, a letter W (or M). The back is plain and it was cast in a single sided mould leaving a flash line around its edge. Diameter 19.2mm, Thickness 3.9mm, Mass 8.72g. The dating of this token is difficult but the form of the letter suggests a Late Medieval or Post Medieval date. The function of these lead discs is also open to doubt. Some may been used as weights (see Egan, 2010, Fig. 232) for which a 14th century date is suggested, or had a religious role, being given to communic…

A cast lead and iron steelyard weight, of probable Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is round in plan and conical in profile, with extensive iron corrosion at both longitudinal ends where the stubs of suspension loops are located. The broader end is concave where the lead has shrunk on cooling, and suggests that it was probably cast in an open mould. There are no markings and the surface has a well-developed white patination. The object is up to 35.7mm in diameter and 32.5mm high, and it weighs 178.5 grams. Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval per…
