A cast lead weight of Early Medieval date, about AD 700 - 1000. It is in the form of a flat disc. On the upper surface and slightly off-centre, is a circular, flattened dome of a secondary metal, thought to be silver, which may be the end of a pin or rivet. This attaches a white metal or silver plate to the top of the disc, of which only a fragment now survives. The surviving part of the plate is decorated with a chevron of double incised lines. The weight has a dark cream patina. It is 12.8mm in diameter and 7.9mm thick. It weighs 7.17gm.
This object is interpreted as an Early M…

A lead alloy weight dating from the Early Medieval period, about AD 800 - 1100. The weight is hexagonal in plan with a flat base and sides that taper slightly inwards towards the top. Three sides are longer than the other three sides, arranged alternately. The top is inset with a decorative copper alloy plate that is also hexagonal but with concave sides. The central motif on the plate is an equilateral triangle with concave sides, each of the three apices of the triangle terminating in a crescent with the points facing outwards to create three sides of the hexagon. Each of the concav…

An Early Medieval circular lead weight with a copper alloy stud embedded in the top. There are several Viking weights known that have an earlier piece of metalwork, often with insular decoration, reused by setting into the top of the weight. This example is a circular stud with a raised rim and a moulded central triskele design of three S shaped moulded swirls all springing from a central circle. The central circular cell is empty, but the other areas of the field are decorated with concentric curved triangular panels, with beading in the centre of each. There are slight traces of the…

A copper-alloy weight in the form of a fourteen-sided polyhedron, effectively a cube with the corners cut off. Eight of the sides are equilateral triangles, the other six are rectangular. Each of the rectangular sides is decorated with six incised dots in two rows of three, as they would appear on a die. The border of each rectangle is delineated by a line of smaller incised dots. It is 10.9mm in length and 8.7mm wide. It weighs 3.92gm. The weight is Early Medieval in date, and can be closely paralleled by the polyhedral Viking weights in the Ainsbrook hoard from North Yorkshire (Treas…

A lead-alloy weight set with a silver pendant.
Description: The weight consists of a drop-shaped piece of tin-lead alloy, flattened at the ends and set on top with a silver pendant in the form of a convex, bearded man's head with a moustache; length, 28.0 mm. The hair and beard are indicated by more or less vertical grooves. The suspension loop of the pendant is broken off and there are traces of gilding in the grooves and hollows of the decoration. A beaded vertical rib above the man's nose gives a helmet-like appearance to the hair. There is a plug of tin/lead alloy in the centre…

A lead alloy object which is inset with a piece of gilded and patterned copper alloy to form what is probably a weight dating from the Early Medieval period. The object is oval in plan and is 24.2mm long, 19mm wide and 9.2mm thick. The lead is hollow on the reverse. The top of the object is formed by the piece of gilded copper alloy. It seems to be a piece which is cut from a circular object because one edge is curved and has a wide gilded border. The internal design consists of a wide dividing line from which most of the gilding is missing, with a decorated panel on each side. One pa…

A copper alloy trade weight from the modern period. The weight is a circular disc with a raised rim on the top face. It weighs 13.7g or 0.48oz and can be interpreted as a half oz weight. It has a diameter of 27.2mm and is 4mm thick. There are three stamps on the top: a quartered shield with a dagger in the top left quarter at 11 o'clock (for the London Guildhall), a sword at 2 o'clock and a ewer (for the Founder's Company, makers of weights) at 7 o'clock. All stamps are the same way up. The Guildhall stamp was only used from 1826 onwards, but at this time the ewer is supposed to have …

A circular lead fabric weight. There is a circular recess in the centre on one side, within which are two circular holes that pierce the disc. Despite looking like a button, these weights were and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Examples can be seen on page 83 of Bailey's (2004) Buttons and Fasteners. They seem to come into use perhaps in the eighteenth century, and are still available to buy today. This example is in good condition with a white patina that is slightly damaged round the edges. It is 24.3mm in diameter and 4.4mm thick.

Possible fishing weight, shaped from sedimentary rock. The weight is roughly rectangular shaped at the base and tapers slightly towards the top where there is the remains of what may be a circular suspension loop. The loop has broken away at the top, probably as a result of the stone being fairly soft and porous(it is a type of sandstone).
The weight is 106.4g in mass and measures 67.4mm in length, 50.8mm in width and 27.4mm in thickness.

Lead Viking weight dating from the late 9th - early 10th century. The weight is circular with a flat base and top; the sides taper slightly from the base to the top giving an overall truncated conical shape. The weight has a copper decorated flat copper alloy mount in the top surface known as a single strike Pressbletch mount. The mount has approximately a quarter missing where it has either worn or broken away. The mount is very thin and may have been pressed over a pre-moulded surface on the weight. The decoration is quite worn and difficult to make out but appears to be an interlac…

Circular lead object, probably a weight (or gaming counter). The object weighs 25.1g and measures 19.8mm in diameter and 10.75mm in thickness. It is crudely cast and has a rough surface on the top (this was possibly some sort of decoration although no particular pattern is visible). The object is possibly post-medieval in date.
