A medieval lead shield-shaped weight. It has a stepped perimeter and expands in width to the base. The raised body is decorated with three lions passant guardant to the right. The reverse is undecorated and has a rectangular perforation at the top; the perforation is sub-oval on the front of the object and was probably used for attachment. The object has a light brownish-cream patina and is in good condition. Dimensions: 56mm in length, 38mm in width, 13mm thick, 233.4g. Cast copper alloy weight dating to the Early Medieval period. The object is sub-circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The upper surface is decorated with five running spirals within a grooved border. The reverse of the object is decorated with three ring-and-dot decorations which are unevenly spaced. Some signs of corrosion can be seen on the lower surface. The object has a dark green patina. Weights such as this are usually attached to a block of lead. Although the object measures 5.98mm in thickness it appears to have originally been a mount from a shrine. It can be d…

Small cast lead Viking weight which is rectangular in plan. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin plate of copper alloy moulding which has a bright green patina. There is moulding on the top of the copper plate which has been gilded, the remains of which can be seen in the grooves of the decoration. The design is of two spirals with an indistinct moulded animal head where the two circles meet. It is likely to be Hiberno-Scandinavian and can be dated to the late 8th/early 9th century.

A cast lead fabric weight, flat and circular, with two holes in the centre. Of simple design, with rounded edges and no decoration. These weights were (and are) used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. They seem to have come into use perhaps in the eighteenth century, and are still available to buy today.

Lead shield shaped weight with crowned lis in relief. This weight is close to the averdepois pound (454g), the discrepancy may be accounted for by a slight loss at the point of the weight. Also, the averderpois pound was 16oz but there is evidence that in some parts of the country it was 15oz. Ref. Biggs N. & Wither P., Lead Weights – The David Rogers Collection, cf. 100-103. Biggs and Wither note there are five types of ‘standard’ weight; three lions passant, a quartered shield, a single lion, and a crowned lis. They note that reports from the York area suggest that the crown…
