A lead fabric weight with an indentation in the centre of the front, which contains two holes, one either side of a central ridge. Around the indentation a decorative linear pattern has been etched into the surface: a circle formed of short diagonal grooves. Both the front and back surfaces of the object are pitted and scratched. The weight measures 31.7mm x 32.6mm, is 3.3mm deep and weighs 27g. The indentation measures 9mm in diameter. This object can be compared with SUSS-4D4421 on this database, which has similar decoration. These weights were and are used to weigh down the he…

Weight. Cast circular disc with notches. (No image available.) Weight 9.04g (other dimensions not recorded). (Report by Susan M. Youngs, formerly British Museum). This object is most similar to weight 11 from Gilton, Kent, Grave 66 (Scull 1990, fig. 2), one of the few weight-sets to have been found in grave. When found individually, such things can be impossible to identify reliably (Hinton 2000, 63-6 and 111-2); in this case, the notches enabled the identification to be made. At 9.04 g, the disc is within a reasonable tolerance of seven times a unit of 1.3 g, based on Merovingi…

A small cast lead weight of later medieval date used by goldsmiths in relation to bullion. It is rectangular in form with inwardly curving sides. The upper surface is filled by a fleur-de-lis in low relief; the lower surface is plain. The object now has an off-white colour. Its mass of 55.9 grains (3.62g) relates to an eighth of a Paris troy ounce (30.5g) allowing for c. 5% loss to to wear and corrosion. The form and mass are comparable with a pair of bullion weights illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49; refs. 156, 157) and an example on this database - ref. SF-8F1591.

Flat circular lead weight with a piercing 3.3mm in diameter near one edge. It is c.37mm in diameter and thicker (6mm) at the end opposite the piercing (4mm). It weighs 54.20g. It would be unusual to wear a lead pendant and this is probably a weight intended for suspension. It is probably post medieval in date.

Lead object of unknown type, possibly a weight. The shape of the object might best be described as a flattened sphere. The two flattened ‘ends’ have a concave central sub-circular area, although this is more pronounced on one end. The object is otherwise undecorated.

Irregular conical shaped lead weight. The weight has a sub-circular shaped base (Diameter c28.3mm) which has a crude, thick, irregular rim, which appears to be formed from excess lead that has folded over the base, and a sub-oval recessed area in the centre which is flat. The weight is crudely made and has four, now heavily worn, longitudinal ridges, running from the base of the object to the apex, so that they form an X-shape when viewed from above. Where the ridges meet, at the apex of the conical, there is a small, U-shaped corroded iron attachment loop.
