Medieval lead alloy, probably pewter, weight in very poor condition. Now sub-square, but no original edge extant. On one face a large saltire in relief. >47mm across. Thickness 10mm. Weighing 3.143oz avoirdupois / 2.8650oz Troy. Perhaps more likely to have been for 4oz avoirdupois, when the amount of probable loss is taken into consideration.

A short, bi-conical perforated lead weight, with a flat top and base. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a circular section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of excavated examples and lack of context this weight must remain undated. The weight is decorated with lines that radiate out from the centre. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.

Incomplete cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Medieval - Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is broadly circular in plan and regular in cross section. Neither face of the weight is decorated, however one face seems to have a series of irregular punches / stamps impressed in the surface. Due to the corrosion and patina of the weight these marks cannot be accurately read. The weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but slightly corroded and abraded, patina which covers all surfaces. This example is most likely to date from the later medieval or post medieval periods an…

Lead alloy possible weight of unknown date. The weight is a narrow shield shape with a loop arching from side to side at the top. The front is convex. The weight is 22.8mm long, 10.3mm wide and 5.4mm thick. It weighs 6.1g (0.2oz). Helen Geake writes: “It is very difficult to establish hard and fast rules with lead weights, as we have little material from excavated contexts to compare. The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle whorls to fishing weights to trade weights.” Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as …
