A copper alloy Victorian half-ounce trade weight. The weight resembles a shallow cup shape with the short side tapering to the base. On the top surface, there is a central crown mark present with 'VR' beneath. This belongs to the Victorian period. Also, there are more off-centre marks, with another crown and '[W]W' beneath, and a strange symbol. It measures 25.24mm x 5.35mm, weighing 13.14g/0.46oz. This weight dates between 1837 and 1901.

A complete rectangular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object with rounded copper alloy insertion possibly for a loop. This object is possibly a home made weight probably relatively modern in date, 19th-20th century. The lead weight is flat in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. Lead weights are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. The length is 40mm, width 22mm, thickness 12mm and weight is 158.80g.

A cast copper alloy weight of probable late post-medieval or modern date (1700-1800). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point on the obverse and a raised boss on the reverse; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. Around the edge of the front face are a series of stamped marks, these are corroded but relatively legible: they consist if the initial A (probably for Queen Anne), a poorly defined sword (th…

An incomplete circular lead object, probably a weight or similar object. It is flat, circular in form and missing part of one side due to old breaks. Both faces of the object have an impression or imprint of a coin of George III, probably a penny as Seaby no. 3780. One face carries a laureate bust left with the legend GEORGIVS III D G[], all in reverse/retrograde due to the coin being impressed into the lead. The opposite face also carries impressed decoration, perhaps the reverse of the same coin as a ground line is visible, possibly beneath a seated Britannia? The precise form of th…

Lead offcut. Thick cast lead, knife-cut at an angle on all sides to a truncated pyramidal form. The very fresh and un-patinated finish of the object is unusual, and could indicate a very recent date; or alternatively if an older item, that it has been in a sealed context until very recently. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000. Length: 17.5mm, Width: 14.4mm, Thickness: 10.3mm

A complete copper alloy trade weight, dating to the Victorian period (Modern, 1837-1901 AD). This particular trade weight was verified in London, as notated by the stamp depicting the shield of St. George and the Ewer, but the portcullis circle mark indicates that this weight was made or sold in Westminster, which was a part of London outside of the jurisdiction of the Founders Company (Biggs1992, 54). The weight was then stamped with SUSSEX and a wide crown in the centre when it was distributed to the region. This particular example currently weighs 6.39 grams; weights of an ounce or…

Copper alloy weight. Cast circular nesting weight, with incuse legend (not readable) and central figures 1?6; a slightly concave base bears a projecting central pimple. Corroded. The mass indicates this to be a one ounce measure; the notation may refer to its being one sixteenth of an averdepois pound. Probably from a set of scales and weights for kitchen use. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1930. Diameter: 29.4mm, Height: 7.6mm, Weight: 26.13gms.

Copper alloy Weight, one of a nesting set, representing one averdepois ounce. Cast discoid weight with basal dimple and prominent rim around its upper side. A stamped crowned VR attests the inspection of this weight. The Weights and Measures Act of 1875 established formal procedures for the verification of weights, so a date between 1875 and 1901 may be apt. Suggested date: Modern, 1875-1900. Small circular cast cu-alloy weight, probably dating from the early 18th century. The weight was part of a 'nest of weights' and has a small rim around the upper surface in which a small weight would have fitted. The weight itself would have sat in the heavier weight underneath. The upper surface is stamped with a crowned 'WR' which probably means WILLIAM REX which would date the weight to the early 18th century.
