Medieval weight; Cast lead weight of bell shape: The weight is essentially a circular cone, although it flares out towards the bottom and is flattened at the top. It has a curved suspension loop at the top, formed from a strap of lead, and is pierced in the centre of the base. The weight looks to have been reshaped after casting, although this is difficult to determine as it is also somewhat pitted and gouged across its surface. The lead has a white patina, of varying thickness. Height 41.3mm, width (“diameter”) 33.4mm, weight 185.3g Lead weights are difficult to date due the…

Lead and copper alloy spherical weight. The spherical body is composed of lead with a copper alloy suspension loop. It is more than possible that this was used as a clapper for a small hand bell, attached via a chain to the bell.

Cast lead alloy circular disc weight, probably medieval, ?12th or 13th century. The upper surface has raised decoration of an octofoil (or floriated cross?) with alternating pointed and rounded petals, and mis-formed central circular pellet. On the reverse are a central circular dimple, a wide shallow linear groove across two-thirds of the diameter, a narrow linear groove crossing this, and three closely spaced short linear scratches (with another possible scratch to the left) towards the edge (possibly denoting the weight?). Two areas of damage to the edge. Diameter 33.85mm, thickness…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is nicely made, with a different decoration on each side. One side is decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other, resembling Norse runes (although they are not runes!). The other side is decorated with similar lines criss-crossing each other, but in addition, several dots in relief have been inserted between the lines. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 gr…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and no decoration is visible. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 21.7 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is decorated with several lines of circular dots in relief - one both sides around the central perforation. This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

Lead alloy (with some copper/bronze) weight or perhaps a gaming piece. It is circular in plan and has a rounded top. The decoration has been moulded and is on the upper (rounded) face only. The decoration is in the form of a stylised sun with rays emanating from a central circle. The bottom of the weight is smooth. Weights like this can date from the Iron Age period onwards and are very hard to date precisely. This weight probably dates to the Medieval period.

Cast lead weight, rectangular in plan and profile, and flat in section. It has been incised at one end with the letters 'M' and 'N' which might refer to someone's initials. The top face has also been incised with a single horizontal line down the middle of the weight. Small flat lead rectangular or square weights are often termed 'Apothecary weights' which were used from the 15th to the 17th centuries, once the mass of the English penny declined steeply and the current penny could no longer be used as a substitute for a weight, especially for sensitive purposes such as making medic…

Copper alloy trade weight. Probably 15th to 16th century. A small, circular, uniface weight. There are two concentric incised lines at the edge. The obverse is stamped with a crown at one edge and a lis opposite at the other edge. These stamps are over the incised bands. There is small hollow at the centre of the weight and the whole surface is slightly concave. The reverse of the weight has clear file marks over the whole surface. The weight of the object does not appear to conform with any known 15th to 16th century weights for coins and the placement of the symbols is different to …
