A lead weight which is conical in shape and has an incomplete iron loop projecting from its tapering terminal. It measures 55.00mm in height and has a base diameter of 36.31mm, and a weight of 317.32g. This weight is Roman to post medieval in date, the presence of an iron loop may mean it is at the earlier end of this date range.

A lead weight of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The object is a crude, flattened, sub-square shape with a simple raised cross on one face dividing it into four sections. The surface is heavily corroded and there is damage in places. Weights like these were made locally on small scale from the Roman period onwards and as such are difficult to date precisely when not found in a secure, dated archaeological context. The form and decoration on this example suggests a medieval to post-medieval date. Length: 67.06mm, width: 63.83mm, thickness: 18.76mm

A lead weight or spindle whorl dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1200-1700). The object is circular with two flat faces and a roughly rounded edge. In the centre is a large circular perforation measuring 8.6mm in diameter. The object is undecorated and has a dark patina. Dimensions: Diameter 29.7mm; thickness 4.6mm; weight 18.92g Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards.

An incomplete lead alloy weight likely dating from the medieval to the post medieval period (c.AD 1200-1700). The weight is sub-conical in shape with a perforation through the off-centre. It is udecorated and has a rough surface and a dark grey patina. Dimensions: Length 17.5mm; width 21mm; weight 30.38g Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000) note that standing weights made of lead were still used in comparatively recent times.

Post-medieval weight, probably for two-ounces. It’s current mass is 55.3g or 1.88oz. It is a neatly cast flat isosceles triangle with bevelled edges. The front (or top) face bears a large merchant’s mark in moulded relief. It is composed of a retrograde figure 4 with elongated vertical and horizontal bars. The vertical runs centrally between the two long edges before splitting into two diagonals and extending toward the two less acutely angled corners. An additional horizontal bar crosses the vertical just before the split, and another bar crosses the left-hand-side diagona…

Medieval shield-shaped four-ounce lead weight. It is flat, with one shorter, straight edge and two longer convex edges which join together at a rounded point. It is thicker at the left and bottom and tapers (thins out) gradually towards the top-right corner. The front face is decorated with a very prominent central three-pronged figure (like a Y), in fairly high relief (2mm), with arms of approximately equal length, all square-ended. The two oblique arms project from the sides of the top of the vertical at angles of 110 and 130 degrees. Probably 13th or 14th century. Length: 54.3mm. W…

A spherical, cast lead perforated artefact of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1800, probably used as a weight. The hole is wider at one end than the other (4.4mm diameter to 2.7mm diameter). It is 14.6mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. It  weighs 15.5g (0.54oz). It is slightly over mass to be a half ounce weight (which should be 14.1g), though it could be a half ounce in the Apothecaries' system. It is often suggested that objects of this shape are beads or net or line weights for fishing or birding.

Possible weight, of sub-square plan with radiused corners, it appears that the straight sides have been hammered as the edges expand, an off-centre, sub rectangular perforation has been punched through the weight, four deeply punched flower/sun motifs decorate one face, each stamp has a central, circular element with eleven radiating “petals” or “rays”. Possibly an unofficial ¼ oz weight, maybe the stamps are an attempt to legitimise/make official its use, denote a certain unit(s) of weight, or are simply decorative. Medieval to Post Medieval, 1066-1900 AD.

A complete lead alloy weight, dating from an unknown period. The weight is 'barrel-shaped', and has an uneven aperture throughout its interior. There is a brown-grey patina on the surface. It is possible that this weight is early medieval in date as a quantity of material dating to this period has been found in the vicinity. However, Watling (2009, 249) notes that similar weights, probably used to nets used for fishing and bird netting, have been found on sites ranging from the Iron Age to medieval periods. The examples illustrated by Watling (ibid) have been rolled to form a …

A cast lead alloy weight of late medieval to post medieval date (c. AD 1300 - 1700). The weight is an irregular regular hexagonal shape in plan and trapazoidal in cross section (widening towards it base). The weight is a light grey sometimes creamy off white colour.  The weight is 20mm long, 17.2mm wide, 10.4mm and weighs 32.77 grams. Several hexagonal merchant weights are recorded on this database, cf YORYM-D21FA8, NLM-8B49B9 without a central perforation. It is possible this is a repurposed casting from such a mould.

It is shield shaped and the front is decorated with a moulded double fleur design on a raised plinth. The weight has a yellow grey patina with areas of wear. The top edge is probably a cut of patinated sheer break. The top of the fleur design is missing, and the mass is too heavy for a 2 ounce weight and not enough for a 4 ounce weight. It is probably an incomplete 4oz weight. A discoid, cast lead weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, about AD 1280 - 1700. It is circular in plan,  with one flat face and one face that is domed but truncated with a smaller flat face. There is no decoration nor any marks. It is 31.1mm in diameter and 8.7mm thick. It weighs 55g (1.93oz). It has a grey patina. It was probably intended as a two ounce weight in the Imperial, Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems of weight measurement (Egan, 1998, page 302).

A sub-triangular, cast lead perforated artefact, probably a weight, dating from the Post Medieval period, AD 1600 - 1900. It is flat in profile, and sub-triangular in plan, with curved sides and rounded corners. The edges are bevelled. The reverse is pitted, perhaps from the casting process. The narrow end is perforated with an irregular hole of 3-5mm diameter. The weight is 41.9mm long, 23.9mm wide and 5.9mm thick. It  weighs 36.4g. The mass does not obviously fit into standard units of measurement, but the weight may have been used to add mass, such as a line or net weight.
