Irregular folded lead weight of unknown date (probably Roman – Post Medieval 50-1700 AD). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. The upper edge has been pierced by a regular pierced hole (diameter: 6.2mm). The lower edge of the weight has been folded back upon itself which has created a much thicker lower edge; this presumably makes the weight hang evenly. There is no evidence of cast or incised decoration on the weight. The weight is a mid cream yellow colour with a relatively even patina. There are small areas of light grey active laminating corrosion; this is m…

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries’ weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed from a clipped sheet of lead. Each of the sides is slightly flattened and tapers. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with four circular stamps. Each stamp is exactly the same as the others being a raised rose with a central pellet set above a border of pellets. It is possible that the weight is further decorated with small pellets or notches around the outer edge; these have been badly a…

Small lead bead or strap junction. It is circular in shape, but rectangular in cross-section, about 7mm high. The On the obverse, the underlying perforations for the straps/bands were repeated in a moulded the decoration. The location of the perforations can also be seen from the underside, but there is no additional moulded decoration. A more practical use for an item like this could have been as net sinker.

Lead alloy weight of late medieval or early post medieval date. These weights are widely known as 'spindle whorls' and have been found in archaeological contexts of the late medieval period, but it possible that they had a much wider use, such as as netsinkers or weights for traps. This example is of roughly double conical shape with moulded decoration on both surfaces. It is unusual, however, that the outer rim is decorated with a 'moulded rope' ornament. Furthermore, it is unusual to find only one aspect of wear: in this case, only one quarter of the inner circle appears to be worn h…

Lead trapezium shaped weight. The surfaces are not smooth- probably due to corrosion and wear. All the edges and corners are rounded. No typology has been made of weights so they are very difficult to date precisely. This is most likely to date to the Medieval or Post-Medieval periods.

Lead weight in the shape of an acorn. The weight appears complete but there is the remains of some iron corrosion at the wider end. Also at this end is a small hole. This could be the remains of an attachment. These weights have not been put into a typology so they are very hard to date precisely. This one probably dats to the Medieval or Post-Medieval periods.

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Post Medieval or early modern date (1550 - 1800). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed in the shape of the royal crown. The front face of the weight has an intricate designed crown which has been achieved through casting. It consists of a double jeweled band from which a double looped frame expands. Detailed floriated side fleurs are present as a fluer-de-lys shaped ornaments. At the centre of the crown is a cross formed with wedge shaped axis, above this is a much degraded plume of feathers (presumably the em…

Two cast lead weights found in close proximity. The weights are flat and circular but lack any markings or decoration. They are not closely datable. The larger weight has a diameter of 58mm, is 10.9mm thick and weighs 246.28g (equivalent to 12oz or 3/4 of a pound). The smaller weight has a diameter of 42.53mm, is 8.56mm thick and weighs 100.28g (equivalent to 4oz of 1/4 of a pound). They have been broadly dated from 1600-1800.

Lead alloy weight, probably from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period. It is circular in plan with an uneven rim around the edges on both faces. A slightly incomplete cast lead standing weight, dating from the Roman – Post Medieval period, between AD 43 – 1800 (length: 29.5mm; diameter at base: 23mm; weight: 52.99g). The octagonal pyramid weight has an slightly broken tip where a probable suspension hole may have once been present. Each tapering side of this octagonal weight extends downwards to form an slightly irregular sub-circular base. The base of the artefact is uneven with a circular indenation visible in the centre (diameter of indentation: 4mm; approximate depth of indenation: 4/5mm). Overall, the weight is in a …

A complete whetstone or weight with suspension loop. The form of such objects is rather conservative and chronologically unchanging, making them difficult to date precisely. However, the present artefact, with its riveted metal suspension loop, seems likely to fall within the postmedieval period. It is rectangular in profile and section, and is relatively thick (13.5mm). It measures 54.5mm x 21.9mm, with a 23.6mm high suspension loop attached near the top, so that the total length of the object is 58.6mm, though the base is broken. It weighs 41.7mm. The metal loop is connect…

A cubic weight of lead. Each of the weight's six faces is slightly concave, and three have central depressions or surface perforations. The weight weighs 40.4 g, and it is close to describing a perfect cube, as it measures 16.1mm x 16.3mm x 16.5mm. it is difficult to confidently ascertain the date or function of such a weight.

A worn and corroded sub-conical weight cast in lead. The crude base bears an off-centre perforation which runs along the length of the object (Dia.: c. 7.6mm); the hole tapers slightly towards the top. Around the hole is possibly a circular groove. This weight is undiagnostic and could date anywhere from the Roman to post-medieval periods.
