A lead alloy weight. It has been formed by rolling a sub circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former. Hence the narrowing 'flap' of material can be seen along one side of the narrow weight, basicaly cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends. It has an even, light patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time, possibly as fishing weights, amongst other applications. A lead weight. The weight is circular in form and engraved with ‘IIII’ on one face. The reverse has a single linear line running across the face but is otherwise plain. It has been suggested that leads weights incised with a form of number may represent the weight of the weight in ounces. If this example was meant to be four ounces, it is underweight at 3.6 ounces. Illegal lead weights are notoriously difficult to date as they bear no official mark.
