A probable late Medieval-Post Medieval cast lead allow weight, c.AD 1400-1800. This is a flat-faced, circular weight with a small central perforation. There are no markings on either face and the surface displays a light grey colour. The weight of this item is nearly 2 oz in the old apothecary system. Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the Medieval period onwards. It is unclear what the original mass of the wei…

A cylindrical lead possible weight, probably dating from the Post Medieval or Modern periods, about AD 1600-1900. The base is flat and the top is uneven and rough. The sides of the object are roughly marked with horizontal grooves and lines. The height is 25.6mm, diameter 20.5mm and weight 65.1g.  This mass of 65.1g slightly over 1/6 pound under the Troy system (1/4 mark) and also over weight for two ounce weights. This means is could be a weight for adding mass suchas a sash window weight or clockweight rather than a weight …

Lead weight. Cast sub-discoid flat-sided disc with suggestion of a rim on either side, patinated. Form and surface condition could suggest a Roman date. However, the mass equates almost exactly with three Viking Age units of 4.07gms, as are thought to have been used in areas under Danish Viking influence to govern transactions in silver bullion, and perhaps for a period thereafter where such practices had become established. A weight made in the [then] familiar style of a Roman weight but observing Viking weights and measures might point to Anglo-Saxon involvement in its fabrication. S…

Lead possible weight. Cast oval plano-convex object, pierced with a possibly drilled hole on the site of a short cut at its edge, and with a broad cut across its flat surface; patinated. This might have been cast from scrap as a tiny ingot as the underside is rough and perhaps sanded but the hole suggests it was then put to some suspended use. Improvised use – perhaps for only a single operation – as a palm guard might equally be entertained. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 41.5mm, Width: 33.8mm, Thickness: 10.1mm, Weight: 58.57gms

A complete lead-alloy weight dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period (43-1800 AD). In plan the weight is broadly trapezoidal with concave top and bottom to the weight, the sides are incised with two lines following the outer (long) edges, the outer parts obscured, rectangular in section, two holes are included in the cast, probably to facilitate suspension, one at each end. Weight equates to 7 3/4 ounces, probably intended as an 8 oz weight. Cf. WREX-F979D1 for a broadly similar but lighter example.
