A complete, cast lead-alloy discoidal possible weight or perhaps a large token of probable Medieval to Modern date about AD 1300-1800. The disc has one irregular face and one smooth face, but no obvious decoration or markings. The diameter is 29.1mm, the thickness is 3.8mm, and the weight is 20.33g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standard system of weighing. It could be a weight for a singular specific purpose, or it could be a large token.

A lead alloy artefact; a weight dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval period, about AD 1200-1900. It is discoid in form with a flat base and straight sides which taper slightly towards the upper surface. On the upper surface are some oval indentations, probably damage, and two short stubs of a ferrous material, probably the remains of a suspension loop. The ferrous inclusion penetrates through the disc and is visible in the centre of the lower surface. The artefact has a light cream patina. It is 19.6mm in diameter and 11.9mm thick. it weighs 25.37g. This mass could be 1 ounce in …

A discoid, lead alloy artefact, probably a weight, probably dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods, about AD 1250-1800. Both sides are flat and unmarked except for damage in the form of scratches probably sustained since deposition in the soil. The sides have a very slight slope between base and upper surface. It has a mid-grey patina and is 30.7mm in diameter and 6.6mm thick. It weighs and weight 44.9g (1.58oz imperial). The mass suggests that it could be a 2 ounce weight in the Tower or Troy systems, but is may also be a weight for adding mass rather than measuring.

A lead alloy, or copper alloy with a high lead content, fragment probably of a weight of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval, AD 1700 - 1900. The fragment appears to be from a roughly circular disc with a central perforation. It has been suspended on a string or wire, and is significantly worn, so the central hole is elongated into a slot. Dimensions: length 33.3mm, width 27.7mm, thickness 10.4mm, weight 48.7g. Rather than for measuring mass, this probable weight is likely to have been used to add mass to weight something down. The breaks are patinated. Superficially similar to a …

A Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights, dating from about AD 1300-1600. The weight is a shallow bowl or cup. It has a circular base with the sides flaring up to a wider rim. Unlike other examples on the PAS database, there is no decoration and the cup is completely plain. It has a smooth yellow patina. It is 40.4mm diameter, 10.9mm high and the walls are 3.4mm thick. 56.2g. This mass is 1.98oz, so the weight was probably intended as a two ounce weight. Egan 1998:309-10 discusses a set of six lead cup weights in the British Museum for …

A lead alloy wedge shaped standing weight of probable Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1500. The weight has a slightly off rectangular base, with two triangular sides, and two rectangular sides tapering to a blunt point at the apex. It has a slight tilt. There is no sign of a suspension hole through the top of the weight. The weight has a smooth grey patina. It is 22.12mm high, and is 16.48mm long and 12.10mm wide. It weighs 19.76g. The nearest mass to this in Egan, 1998, The Medieval Household, page 302, is the 12 pennyweight in the English Troy system. This would have been 18.70g. Thi…

A lead standing weight of uncertain date, Early Medieval to Post Medieval, about AD 850 - 1700. The weight is roughly conical, but the base is pentagonal and the five sides taper as they extend upwards. The upper end of the weight is curved to the side and is damaged, making it unclear what shape it was originally. It is 35.1mm tall, 19.4mm wide and 18.3mm thick. 50.3g. This mass is only a little short of two ounces. Compare CORN-6BC1A8 and GLO-F61AB4.

The sides of the weight flare to the flat sub-circular base. The top is rounded and there is no evidence of an attachment loop. The weight is undecorated. It has a well-developed cream coloured patina across all surfaces. Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is shield shaped and has a raised shield shaped area on the front face. The central design is of a crown over a fleur in relief. The weight has a mass of 213gm (7 1/2oz) so was probably intended as an 8oz weight. It has, however suffered some damage to the pointed base and the upper corners. The weight is 52.7mm long, 41.5mm wide and 15.0mm thick. It has a patchy cream and grey patina. A cast lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500. It is shield shaped and has a raised shield shaped area on the front, but any design is now illegible. There is an unusually shaped depression in the centre of the reverse, which may be the remains of a authentication mark. There is also a patch or iron corrosion near the lower point on the reverse, and a magnet suggests there is an iron plug here, possible to fine tune the weight. The weight has a mass of 219gm (7 3/4oz) so was probably intended as an 8oz weight. It has, however suffered some damage…

Copied from SWYOR-E1D252 An undatable (but likely to be Medieval to Post-Medieval, about AD 1100 - 1800) conical lead alloy standing weight, with a hole sideways through the apex. It stands at 29.9mm in height with a base diameter of (max) 24.6mm and weighs 61.2g, so was probably intended to be a 2oz weight. The base is slightly concave and there is a small depression at the centre. There are no marking or designs on the weight, but it is somewhat pockmarked and is damaged at the base. It has a well-developed cream coloured patina. This weight is similar to SWYOR-E1D252 and …

A cast lead pendant weight, perhaps a net weight of probable Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500. It is rectangular in section and tapers to a point at one end. At the other end is a crude integral suspension loop with an oval perforation, the the weight tapers in thickness to a wide point. A similar object, but with more design features than this crude example, is illustrated on page 311 of Medieval Households where it is suggested to be a net weight, plumb bob or ship's sounding weight. There are also numerous examples on the database, usually suggested to be net weights for fishing…

A lead weight, or plumb bob, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. The object is ovoid (egg-shaped) and is perforated with a very small hole running from end to end. The hole is 0.6mm diameter, and could only accomodate thin thread or wire. The weight has a smooth, well developed patina with some post-depositional scratches. It is 24.4mm long, 18.6mm diameter and 43.6g. The mass does not appear to correspond closely with any regular system of weighing, perhaps suggesting that the object is a plumb bob or net weight. It does not stand without support.

There is a small circular hole running longitudinally but off-centre through the weight, with a diameter of 2.4mm. The weight is slightly wider at one end than the other. It has rounded corners and a hollow in the base cuased by the lead shrinking as it cooled. It is 18.1mm tall, 15.4mm diameter and 23.87g.
