A complete lead / lead alloy weight most likely dating from the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1200-1600). The weight is circular in shape with a D-shaped section. It has a circular perforation in the centre and is undecorated. It has a powdery grey patina. Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards. Their precise function is also uncertain and may have been used as loom we…

A lead alloy sub-cylindrical steelyard or fishing weight of medieval to post medieval date, The weight is broadly circular in section with the sides sloping inwards from the base towards the apex. The sides are not straight and angle slightly to one side. The base is uneven, possibly warped with time, so that the weight leans to one side when standing flat. It is unlikely to be in its original shape or it could be a misshapen cast. The cylindrical hole running through the centre from apex to base is now filled in with soil but it is possible a metal rod originally went t…

A central thin, cylindrical hole runs the length of the weight, from apex to base. The base has a series of small, thick notched incisions around the central hole, which could be decorative, but could also be the result of post-depositional wear.
