Iron possible weight. Cast heater shield-shaped weight, with slight loss of fabric to the flaking of corrosion at the arises or angles, otherwise in good condition. The mass may suggest this to have represented one half of an averdepois pound, though the manufacture of such an object in iron seems perversely difficult. Some iron implement teeth from agricultural machinery might also acquire such a form through wear, though there is no sign of this having broken from a larger object or setting. Iron and copper alloy possible weight. A possibly cast iron object of a solid flat-based bowl-shaped form with relicts of thin [0.3mm] copper alloy sheathing on its flat base. This appears to have formerly extended further up the sides of the 'bowl', though both its original extent and the overall completeness of the object remain uncertain. Iron probable weight. A straight-sided cast iron block with one straight and one curved end. A round hole of diameter 14.8mm appears set centrally, towards the curved end. A slot of length and width c.9mm abuts the hole and confers the appearance of a key hole. The object was at first taken to be a padlock, but is solid with no provision for a lock mechanism. It may be that the configuration of the hole was intended to permit a locking bar to pass through the hole, which would seem apt for the attachment of weights to agricultural machinery. Iron Possible Weight. Cast iron sphere with moulded aperture of diameter 30.6mm. The probable function of this object was as a weight, as its mass coincides closely with that of one imperial pound. The aperture may have permitted the addition or subtraction of such weights to a balance beam. Another function as a specialised form of shot was considered. However, the dimensions and weight do not coincide with those associated with projectiles for the smaller guns of the 16th and 17th centuries. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Diameter: 56.4mm or 2.2 inches, Weight: 455gms.
