A shield shaped iron artefact, possibly a form of trade weight of Medieval date, about AD 1250 - 1500. The object is shield shaped in plan with a flat top, curved sides and a sharply pointed base. It is rectangular in section. The surface of the object has undergone some corrosion and a layer has partially flaked away so that any markings that may have been present are no longer visible; the object is otherwise in good condition. It is 63.9mm long, 39.6mm wide and 15.9mm thick. It weighs 122.32gm (4.31oz). It has a dark brown patina. Compare another iron weight: SF-6A6240.

Iron and copper alloy possible weight. A possibly cast iron object of a solid flat-based bowl-shaped form with relicts of thin [0.3mm] copper alloy sheathing on its flat base. This appears to have formerly extended further up the sides of the 'bowl', though both its original extent and the overall completeness of the object remain uncertain. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Diameter: 57.3mm, Thickness: 15.5mm, Weight: 182.70gms

An iron core in copper-alloy casing Early Medieval weight, dating to AD 850-1066. It is spherical with two opposite flat faces. One face has a circular sunken line decorated with a series of punched annulets; the opposite flat face might have had the same decoration, but the iron corrosion has burts through the copper-alloy coating and covers large part of the surface. Cf. Rogerson (in EAA 74, 1995, p. 69, fig. 52, no. 136). See a parallel on PAS: NMS-8BB723 Diameter: 24.23 mm Height: 17.83 mm Weight: 40.51 g

Iron probable weight. A straight-sided cast iron block with one straight and one curved end. A round hole of diameter 14.8mm appears set centrally, towards the curved end. A slot of length and width c.9mm abuts the hole and confers the appearance of a key hole. The object was at first taken to be a padlock, but is solid with no provision for a lock mechanism. It may be that the configuration of the hole was intended to permit a locking bar to pass through the hole, which would seem apt for the attachment of weights to agricultural machinery. The best indication if date is afforded …

A heavy iron (possibly lead filled) object which may be a Roman steelyard poise. The object is in essence a heavy round globular ball with a protrusion at one end which may have been an integral circular-section suspension loop with a collar. The base is slightly flattened. The object has a seam running around it from top to bottom. The patina of the object is dark black with a silvery sheen. There are large patches of reddish-brown corrosion. The object weighs 347g and measures 56.87mm in height and has a circumference of 45.85mm. Cf Read B, 2001, Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, P…

A spherical, cast iron weight, probably of post Medieval or Modern date, about AD 1700 - 1900. There is a thin iron wire suspension loop, now broken. The weight is 52.3mm in diameter and weighs 474gm (1 pound, 0.75 ounces). It may have been intended as a 1lb weight without the corrosion.

A very worn and heavily restored late early-medieval barrel-shaped weight. It is biconical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces. The weight has the remains of an iron core surrounded by a largely incomplete and heavily repaired/restored copper-alloy casing. On the flattened top and bottom surfaces the casing has stamped decoration. This comprises at least two rectilinear motifs formed from parallel transverse grooves from which at either and and at the centre extend short vertical and curvilinear strokes. These motifs appear almost like crowns stacked one above the other, al…

Iron Possible Weight. Cast iron sphere with moulded aperture of diameter 30.6mm. The probable function of this object was as a weight, as its mass coincides closely with that of one imperial pound. The aperture may have permitted the addition or subtraction of such weights to a balance beam. Another function as a specialised form of shot was considered. However, the dimensions and weight do not coincide with those associated with projectiles for the smaller guns of the 16th and 17th centuries. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Diameter: 56.4mm or 2.2 inches, Weight: 455gms.

An iron sub-circular disc which is probably a weight. There is a central plug which may be copper alloy. The plug is not corroded and the surface is smooth. The edge of the object is corroded and the surfaces are pitted. It is not clear whether there were ever any markings on the surface. The surface of the iron is rough. There is one deep hole near the edge of the disc which is very rusty. It is not clear whether the hole is original or whether it is just a localised area of invasive corrosion. There is a corresponding hole in the same place on the other side which is less corroded. T…

A complete unusual late early-medieval barrel-shaped weight. Measuring 21.3mm diameter and 16mm in height with a weight of 32.39g. This weight is made of iron with a copper-alloy casing, patches of corroded iron can now be seen through this casing at one end. One of the flat ends of the weight has stamped decoration on it consisting of a border of small circles, within which there is a swastika motif with pellet terminals. The other flat terminal is obscured by corroded iron but traces of the border and central motif can be seen. A very similar weight is illustrated in Biggs (…

Sub-circular bronze coated iron weight of the Tenth or Eleventh Century. Flattened at both ends, with a small globular bump on its round edge. One end bears a motive, which is understood to be a representation of an Arabic inscription, now reduced to a symmetrical pattern; which looks rather like a depiction of a double crown. The motive is surrounded by two rings comprising of a number of circles. On the rounded edge of the object are three, equally placed, incised triangles, comprising of many dots. B M Ager suggests that these may correspond to the weight of the object, which is 91 …
