Record ID: SF-544A38
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead standing weight of unknown date. It is simple in form - roughly conical in shape with a narrow, circular hole through the centre. The surface is scratched and corroded. Because weights like this one are so easy to manufacture they were used for a long period and therefore can usually only be attributed a very broad date range unless there are further identifying features. Length: 21.58mm, max diameter: 19.72mm, weight: 41.09g

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead weight of uncertain date. It is roughly circular in shape, but bent slightly out of shape to one side. One face is convex and the other is flattened. The convex face is decorated with a recessed cross containing a thinner raised cross in the centre, which looks like the imprint of another (unidentified) object. It is highly worn and scratched with a few small holes in the flattened face. It weighs approximately 3/4 of a pound. It is very crude in nature, suggesting that it may be a home made object. It is therefore difficult to date precisely, but may be medieval. L…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable lead post-medieval weight. It appears to have been moulded within a thimble, the shape of which suggests a later post-medieval date. A number of similar examples have been recorded with the PAS including CPAT-DBF4E1 and CPAT-CA6EA1 from Wales and BERK-23A342 from Warwickshire. The identifier of two examples from Wales has suggested that they may be moulded for the manufacture of thimbles due to the indentations on the surface of some, but this would seem unlikely given that this would only produce indentations on the inside of the thimble. Length: 16.02mm, diameter: 15.0…

A cast lead weight, possibly a steelyard weight, of uncertain Roman or later date. It is conical in form with flat base, tapering towards the apex. At the top are the remains of a separately cast iron suspension loop, and at the centre of the base is a circular indentation although the iron suspension loop does not appear to be visible within it. The entire object measures 27.01mm in height, 34.94mm in diameter, and 149.08g. This weight may be of any date from the Roman period onward.

A complete lead and iron probable medieval steelyard weight date. It comprises a globular lead weight with a raised circumferential ridge around the middle suggesting that it was formed from two hemspherical halves and a small circular iron attachment loop extending from one end. Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods, examples of this shape with iron extending from one end only appear to be largely medieval in date Diameter: 16.49mm, length: 27.45mm, weight: 24.73g

A composite lead and copper alloy weight probably of Roman or Medieval date. The weight is roughly ovoid in shape, but very crudely made. There is a strip of copper alloy folded in two embedded in the centre. Both end of this protrude from the weight for c.1.5cm and one is pierced with a small, circular hole and the other has a small knop extending from the end. A cast lead weight of Post-Medieval date. It is disc shaped in form, with a flat, undecorated back face and a front face that carries marks of value. These comprise a large central crowned IR, with a small circular indentation with cross shaped motif above. It measures 30.74mm in diameter, 4.65mm in thickness, and 26.10g in weight. This is a lead trade weight of Post-Medieval date. The initials IR relate either to James I or II, and the single circular punch above may well be indicative of one ounce, since the object falls just below the standard one ounce weight of 28.4g on the av…

This object measures 22.85mm in length, 18.87mm in width, 6.65mm in thickness, 26.06g in weight. There are similar examples recorded on the PAS database (SF-EB7D11), (LON-6A4983), (NMS-7F64B5), (NMS-05E756). These all suggest a variety of dates, however a later date seems most likely, perhaps in the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods.
