A lead weight which is conical in shape and has an incomplete iron loop projecting from its tapering terminal. It measures 55.00mm in height and has a base diameter of 36.31mm, and a weight of 317.32g. This weight is Roman to post medieval in date, the presence of an iron loop may mean it is at the earlier end of this date range.

A complete lead / lead alloy weight or spindle whorl probably dating to the medieval to post medieval period. The object is plano convex. It is undecorated and has a large central perforation measuring 10.53mm in diameter. The object has a light cream patina. Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards. It is unclear what the original mass of the weight was as it has become worn and irregular,…

A lead weight of probable medieval to post-medieval date. The object is a crude, flattened, sub-square shape with a simple raised cross on one face dividing it into four sections. The surface is heavily corroded and there is damage in places. Weights like these were made locally on small scale from the Roman period onwards and as such are difficult to date precisely when not found in a secure, dated archaeological context. The form and decoration on this example suggests a medieval to post-medieval date. Length: 67.06mm, width: 63.83mm, thickness: 18.76mm

A late medieval or post-Medieval lead shield-shaped lead weight. The outer face is decorated with three upwards-pointing transverse chevrons. The surface of the metal is corroded and there is damage in places.  Biggs and Withers (2000, p.34-6) suggest that shield-shaped lead weights were introduced in the second half of the 14th century AD and remained in use as late as the 17th, 18th and even 19th centuries. A complete lead quatrefoil-shaped weight of probable medieval to early post-medieval date. The object is a flattened quatrefoil-shaped. Its outer face has a raised lozenge-shaped in the centre, its corners extending to the outer edges of the object and its outer face decorated with a raised fleur-de-lis. The outer face of each corner lobe is then decorated with three raised pellets and a raised linear border around its outer each. Similar examples can be found in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49, nos.154&155) who describe these as goldsmith's weights. See PAS records…

Two lead truncated conical weights or spindle whorls of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date.  Objects such as these were used for a long period of time for a variety of functions with little change in form. They may be crude spindle whorls, but seem more likely to be weights are are too irregular in shape. 1. Diameter: 19.77mm, thickness: 11.53mm, weight: 16.07g (diameter of central hole: c.7.35mm) 2. A complete lead standing weight of uncertain date. The weight is roughly pyramidal in shape, becoming slightly wider towards the flat base. There is a small integral suspension loop at the apex. The base has two small triangular indentations in its centre. The surface of the metal is corroded. Because of the undiagnostic (and often home made) nature of weights like this one, only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested. A complete conical lead medieval to post-medieval standing weight. It is an elongated, asymetrical conical shape with a flat base and damage to the apex suggesting that a loop was positioned here originally. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.  Biggs (1992) suggests that this style of pyramidal or conical freestanding weight appeared after the Norman conquest. They then appear to have been used throughout the medieval period and probable to some degree beyond, although more attempts were made to standardise the official weight system from the 15th century onwards. …

A complete lead weight or gaming piece of probable medieval or early post-medieval date. It is irregular in shape, consisting of a central flattened conical section with a base that projects slightly to one side. The outer face of the conical section is decorated with a moulded cross with two pellets in each quarter and the reverse has two off-centre, closely spaced, small, circular indentations.  The function of the object is unclear, but given the decoration it may have been a gaming piece of some sort.
