When originally recorded, it was described as below]. : An eight-sided fragment of thick silver plate stamped on both faces with the design of the ‘Two-line’ type of Alfred the Great of Wessex(871-99). Surviving examples of the coinage include examples regarded as part of the official coinage in the name of Alfred and others regarded as contemporary Viking imitations produced in areas outside Alfred’s control. The two are typically differentiated by weight, with Alfred&rs…

Description: The weight consists of a drop-shaped piece of tin-lead alloy, flattened at the ends and set on top with a silver pendant in the form of a convex, bearded man's head with a moustache; length, 28.0 mm. The hair and beard are indicated by more or less vertical grooves. The suspension loop of the pendant is broken off and there are traces of gilding in the grooves and hollows of the decoration. A beaded vertical rib above the man's nose gives a helmet-like appearance to the hair. There is a plug of tin/lead alloy in the centre…

A cast lead weight. The weight is a flat irregular lozenge, plain although slightly concave on the reverse, and with a cast design on the top face. This design has a raised cross with a raised pellet in each quarter. The cross probably also had a central pellet, now damaged, and probably pommee terminals, again now damaged. Biggs and Withers suggest these flat round & square lead weights may have been used in the medieval period to weigh large quantities of silver coinage (maybe in transactions involving large numbers of coins such as rent and tax collection).
