Cast lead alloy weight of probably post medieval date (c.AD 1600-1800).
The object is cast in a roughly cuboid shape with rounded at edges. At the centre of the object is an ovoid perforation measuring 4x2.5mm. The function of the object is unclear but it is likely to have been used as a weight. A similar example on the PAS database includes NMS-C6EBD1.

A cast lead spindle whorl, probably Medieval. The weight is flattish and sub-circular, thicker in the centre and with a perforation running through the middle. The object is fairly flat on both sides, with no decoration present. Similar spindle whorls have been found in medieval contexts including at Codnor Castle, Derbyshire; at the Austin Friary in Leicester (Mellor and Pearce, 1981) and the deserted medieval village of Thrislington (topsoil find; Austin 1989, 137, fig. 58.2). Also see several others on the PAS database, for example LANCUM-4FA054 and LANCUM-B0591B. The diameter is…

Cast lead weight in the shape of a rectangular bell. It has a small circular hole in the top, presumably for attachment. There is a rectangular hollow in the bottom.

Wax would have been put into the hollow in the base, string tied to the attachment hole and the weight thrown over the side of the ship until it hit the bottom. It would have picked up a bit of the surface of the sea floor (sand/mud/shingle) to give some idea of conditions, or where …
