It has a large central circular perforation with an internal diameter of 9mm. The weight is undecorated. The opposite face of the object is flat and undecorated. The object has a mid-greyish white patina and is worn. Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500AD. The diameter is 23mm and …

A complete cast, Post Medieval lead-alloy weight. AD 1600-1800. The weight is conical with a domed crown from which the body gently tapers to a flat base which has a small circular indentation. The weight was formed by pouring molten lead into a thimble casing then allowing it to cool. Concentric pits are present around the top of the object and from these indentations of incised lines follow a spiral pattern around the circumference of the body to the base. Although this object has been described as a weight, it may also be a gaming piece. It is greenish grey in colour. The weight is…

A cast copper alloy Roman weight which may have functioned as a small spindle whorl AD.50-450. This is a biconvex ring weight with a raised band running around the waist of the object. There is some pitting around the ring's outer surface from corrosion during deposition, the object has a dark green patina. This object likely formed the weight for a spindle, though copper alloy rings of this type could have a number of different functions. The weight measures 21.1mm diameter, 8.2mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 10.48 grams.

The sides are bevelled, with the rim wider than the base. The lower surface of the base is has the Roman numeral IV engraved towards the edge. The exterior of the sides are covered in diagonal file marks. The weight has a mass of 28.14g (0.99 of an ounce). The artefact is of a dull-grey/green colour with some patches of off-whit…

A cast lead-alloy conical standing weight of uncertain date. The weight is conical in form, with a slightly concave base; it is hollow and narrows towards the top where it is damaged possibly where there may have been a vertical suspension element. Standing weights of this type were easy to make and used throughout a large period of time. Biconical steelyard weights are common in the Roman period and although this is conical rather than biconical it has been found in direct association with a large quantity of finds from the Roman period. Therefore, it is possible that this weig…

The base of weight is slightly concave and has an incised circular groove surrounding the shaft, 13.19mm in diameter. The top of the cone is rounded off. The shaft exit at both the top of the weight and bottom is roughly sub-rectangular in shape and the shaft is filled with a fine light soil. The weight is undecorated. A complete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight with a narrow iron suspension loop running through it, of uncertain date. The iron wire does not protrude through the base like similar examples; therefore it is unclear whether the wire runs the length of the weight or if it simple loops through the top of the weight. It measures 27.91 mm in diameter, 28.64 mm high and weighs 105 grams. Because lead weights of this type were relatively easy to produce locally and were distributed throughout a wide period of time, they are difficult to date precisely. These types seem to date to b…

A Roman to Post Medieval cast lead alloy standing weight. It is conical with a flat base and truncated top. There is a circular shaped hole running through it from bottom (7.5mm hole diameter) to top (6.3mm hole diameter). The overall dimensions of the weight are 23.1mm diameter, 15.0mm tall, and it weighs 31.96g. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are difficult to date precisely, although most are late Medieval to Post Medieval in date.

A complete cast lead alloy large standing weight of probably Medieval or Post Medieval date (c. 1200-1700 AD). The weight is conical in shape and sub-oval in cross-section with a large circular suspension hole at the top. Lead weights were used throughout a large span of time and were generally easy to manufacture; therefore, they are difficult to date outside of secure archaeological contexts. This style of standing weight seems to have been used most frequently within the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. For a similar example, cf. Biggs and Withers 2000, esp. No. 73.

This record consists of two objects found in relatively close proximity to one another on the same field. A pair of Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy discs. Both sides of the objects are un-decorated without any visible method of attachment or suspension. The lack of diagnostic features makes it difficult to be definitive about both purpose and date but they could possibly be pan weights. One of the objects has a small wedge of metal missing from the outside edge that represents about 10% of the flan. Weight on left - 34.45mm dia, 6.91mm thick, weight 60.18g Weight on right -…

It has an expanded centre and slightly smaller surfaces (Dia.: c. 26mm). Across each surface is a pair of copper-alloy ribs broadly in saltire which connect to a band the covers the edge. They look somewhat like back-to-back 'C's. The inner angles of the 'cross' are alternately straight or curved lines, creating shapes similar to triangles and semicircles respectively. Cast lead piece, probably a plain weight.. It is sub oval in plan with slightly irregular outline; a flat base and a domed top with a flattened, rough area in the centre. There are numerous cuts and indents on the base and sides. It is 51.7mm long, 36.8mm wide, 17.5mm thick and weighs 179 grams. Plain lead weights were made locally for a wide range of uses. They are therefore hard to date accurately and can be Roman - Post Medieval in date although most are from the latter part of this range.

Cast lead pan weight. The weight is circular with a thick raised design on one side. The design is of a square topped shield with slightly convex sides meeting at a point at the bottom and highly dowmed in the centre; any origional design on the shield is now unclear. The weight is 40.9mm in diameter, 16.5mm thick (9.3mm excluding the raised design) and weighs 129 grams, 4.6 ounces. Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate several similar weights, p.23-26 with a range of desgns although none with a shield. They suggest (p.21) such weights were used to measure large bullion paymen…

A simple cone-shaped lead weight, with a circular base. There is a perforation running through the centre of the weight from base to apex. The weight is undecorated but shows surface damage most likely post-loss. These weights are difficult to date and it is possible they could be fishing or net weights to provide mass or weights that are part of a weighing system. However due to a lack of excavated examples and associated dating context this weight can only be assigned a very wide date range. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.
