Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy Roman weight which may have functioned as a small spindle whorl AD.50-450. This is a biconvex ring weight with a raised band running around the waist of the object. There is some pitting around the ring's outer surface from corrosion during deposition, the object has a dark green patina. This object likely formed the weight for a spindle, though copper alloy rings of this type could have a number of different functions. The weight measures 21.1mm diameter, 8.2mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 10.48 grams.

An incomplete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is conical and is formed by a filled sheet metal wrap. The top is missing showing a small hollow. The rest of the object is solid with an uneven circular base. The sheet metal of the wrap has diagonal line down the side probably caused by the lead splitting. The weight has a greyish brown patina. The weight stands 49.4mm high, is 38.9mm in diameter at its base, and weighs 171 grams. Lead weights are very hard to accurately date due to their wide use…

A complete cast lead-alloy spindle whorl or weight dating to the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, c. 1200-1700 AD. In plan view the weight is circular and plano-convex in section with a domed top and a flattened base. The shape of the weight is rather irregular, with one side standing slightly higher than the other. In the centre of the object, a circular aperture is visible. The weight survives in relatively good condition, with an even brownish patina covering most of its surfaces. It measures 20.41mm in diameter, stands 11.05mm high at its highest point, and the circular aperture…

A complete lead standing or hanging weight, probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval periods, c. 1200-1700. The body of the weight is sub-trapezoidal, thinning slightly towards its top before abruptly thinning to form a protruding tab which is broadly rectangular in cross-section. Through this latter a small circular perforation has been crudely drilled in order to allow the weight to be suspended. On the base of the weight two rather wide opposing grooves, their function uncertain, while the main body of the weight has been decorated with a series of irregularly spaced longit…

A complete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is roughly bell shaped, with a thick ridge at its top (though no aperture for suspension) and a prominent dimple in its base. The object is relatively well made, and survives in good condition with a patchy whitish brown patina. The lack of a perforation or aperture in the pre-prepared suspension area suggests that this weight may not have been finished properly, or possibly only existed in order to make the piece easier to pick up. The weight stands 29.4…

A lead weight of uncertain date, ranging from the Roman to post-medieval periods (c. 43-1800 AD). The weight is broadly sub-cylindrical in form and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section, tapering slightly from its base to its top. The base of the weight is slightly indented, and on its flat top is a deep cut-mark probably relating to post-depositional damage. The weight is in relatively good condition, with an even patina covering all of its surfaces. The object is c. 22mm wide at its top, c. 26mm wide at its base, stands 19.48mm high and weighs 123.4g. A cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date and attribution, possibly of Roman date. The weight is of a rectangular cuboid shape, with a rectangular cross-sectioned suspension bar on the upper face with a small circular suspension hole running parallel to the upper face and a semi-circular impression directly above the hole on the outer surface of the suspension bar, possibly indicating where the suspension element wrapped around the bar. No decoration is visible on the faces of the weight and the medium-grey lead alloy colour is covered in buff-white encrustation. The weight measures …

An incomplete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight, probably of Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is missing its upper end with suspension element, exposing a hollow conical weight body and the base of an iron shaft, which would have run through the vertical centre of the weight. The base of the weight is rounded and would not have been used for resting the weight as in standing weights. The remains of the weight measure 61.93 mm high, 32.62 mm wide (at base), 29.08 mm thick (at base); it weighs 193 grams.

A small lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of probable medieval or post-medieval date. The weight is slightly damaged at the apex however it does not appear to have had a suspension loop. A potential alternative use for a pyramidal object of this size and shape is a gaming piece potentially of early-medieval date, but weights of this size and shape are known and is a more likely use. Also the weight of the object is just under one ounce, supporting the suggestion of a weight rather than gaming piece. Compare NARC-3328B4 and page 33 of Biggs and Withers. It is probably Medieval or Po…

A cast lead alloy standing weight, it is sub-conical shape. The weight has a flat oval bottom which narrows into a conical shape. The upper surface has been flattened without a suspension loop. The weight measures 48mm high with the base measuring 20.4mm in diameter and the top 14mm. It weighs 115 grams. The metal is of a dark greyish white in colour. Because standing weights of this type were easy to manufacture and widely produced, they are difficult to date specifically without secure archaeological contexts. It is likely that this example dates from the Medieval to Pos…

A hand made uniface lead-alloy possible weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date, c. 1250-1800. The weight is sub-circular in shape, with one edge sharply squared off as though it has been cut with a knife, possibly to reduce weight. The edges are slightly rounded and the lower face is undecorated with no trace of manufacturing marks or modification. The weight has been decorated on one face with an illegible shape, seemingly composed of three separate raised segments, all cast onto the surface. A complete pyramid-shaped cast lead-alloy hanging weight dating from the Roman to Post Medieval periods (43-1800 AD). In section the weight is broadly trapezoidal as one side extends further than the other. A hole has been punch through the apex to facilitate suspension. These weights are not completely understood and it is possible that a variety of tasks could have been fulfilled by this object, but due to a lack of context this weight must remain undatable. The weight is undecorated, but both ends are flat with rounded edges in addition to the upper surface. The object is well pres…

A complete Post Medieval cast copper alloy trade weight, dating to between AD 1714 and AD 1760. The weight is circular in plan. The item's weight (0.484oz), suggests it was used as a half-ounce weight. The front face is recessed below a raised rim, and has three stamps; Crown over 'G' - the royal cypher, the sword of St Paul - the City of London Guildhall mark, and an ewer - The London Founders' Company mark. The relative positions of the stamps indicate it could have been made during the reigns of George I or George II (Read, 1995). The surfaces are worn and have a dark green patina.…
