A crude lead alloy weight or spindle whorl of uncertain date. The object is broadly circular in plan with a central sub-circular perforation. The hole tapers in diameter from 5.7mm to 8.4mm. Each surface is heavily abraded and irregular with no visible decoration. The spindle whorl has a creamy buff patina. Measurements: diameter: 21.3mm; thickness:13.4mm and weight: 30.83g. Lead weights of this form were commonly used throughout the Roman to post-medieval period for a variety of functions and are therefore difficult to date accurately. If the object is…

A cast, lead alloy standing weight. of uncertain date. The weight is conical in shape with a sub- circular flat base. Possibly damaged at the top. The weight is solid with a whitish grey patina. Lead weights were used throughout a large span of time and were generally easy to manufacture; therefore, they are difficult to date outside of secure archaeological contexts. The weight measures 11.6mm height, 11.9mm diameter at the base and weighs 8.35 grams.

Age uncertain, crudely cast, lead alloy, probable unofficial, trade type weight. Free standing, oval base, conical shape with flat apex and no suspension loop, but there is a small central, circular, dimple/recess at the base. Stable white/pale grey patina but a number of scratches and dents probably from agricultural machinery. This has an unknown date from Roman period to Post medieval (43-1799AD). Ref. An incomplete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is conical and is formed by a filled sheet metal wrap. The top is missing showing a small hollow. The rest of the object is solid with an uneven circular base. The sheet metal of the wrap has diagonal line down the side probably caused by the lead splitting. The weight has a greyish brown patina. The weight stands 49.4mm high, is 38.9mm in diameter at its base, and weighs 171 grams. Lead weights are very hard to accurately date due to their wide use…

A complete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is roughly bell shaped, with a thick ridge at its top (though no aperture for suspension) and a prominent dimple in its base. The object is relatively well made, and survives in good condition with a patchy whitish brown patina. The lack of a perforation or aperture in the pre-prepared suspension area suggests that this weight may not have been finished properly, or possibly only existed in order to make the piece easier to pick up. The weight stands 29.4…

The weight is broadly sub-cylindrical in form and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section, tapering slightly from its base to its top. The base of the weight is slightly indented, and on its flat top is a deep cut-mark probably relating to post-depositional damage. The weight is in relatively good condition, with an even patina covering all of its surfaces. The object is c. 22mm wide at its top, c. 26mm wide at its base, stands 19.48mm high and weighs 123.4g. A cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date and attribution, possibly of Roman date. The weight is of a rectangular cuboid shape, with a rectangular cross-sectioned suspension bar on the upper face with a small circular suspension hole running parallel to the upper face and a semi-circular impression directly above the hole on the outer surface of the suspension bar, possibly indicating where the suspension element wrapped around the bar. No decoration is visible on the faces of the weight and the medium-grey lead alloy colour is covered in buff-white encrustation. The weight measures …

A cast lead alloy standing weight, it is sub-conical shape. The weight has a flat oval bottom which narrows into a conical shape. The upper surface has been flattened without a suspension loop. The weight measures 48mm high with the base measuring 20.4mm in diameter and the top 14mm. It weighs 115 grams. The metal is of a dark greyish white in colour. Because standing weights of this type were easy to manufacture and widely produced, they are difficult to date specifically without secure archaeological contexts. It is likely that this example dates from the Medieval to Pos…

A complete pyramid-shaped cast lead-alloy hanging weight dating from the Roman to Post Medieval periods (43-1800 AD). In section the weight is broadly trapezoidal as one side extends further than the other. A hole has been punch through the apex to facilitate suspension. These weights are not completely understood and it is possible that a variety of tasks could have been fulfilled by this object, but due to a lack of context this weight must remain undatable. The weight is undecorated, but both ends are flat with rounded edges in addition to the upper surface. The object is well pres…

Cast lead alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl or loom weight of unknown date. The weight is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile; in cross section it is an irregular circle. Through the centre is a sub-circular hole (13.5mm in diameter). The surface of the weight is very corroded but on one side there is a small indentation which may be the remains of the suspension element. There is no sign of decoration .
