An incomplete lead or lead alloy possible Fishing weight or plumb bob, of probable Medieval dating (12th to 16th Centuries AD). The weight is a flattened spherical pointed oval shape, decorated with two incised lines on either side. An incomplete integral circular perforation (suspension loop) is present at one of the pointed ends. The length is 63mm, the width is 16mm and the weight 6.54g.This weight was perhaps used as a sinker for a net or as a plumb bob. Cf. Egan (1998), 310-11, fig.231). The metal is a mid-cream to bluish-white in colour with a smooth patina. Weights such as this…

A cast, lead alloy standing weight. of uncertain date. The weight is conical in shape with a sub- circular flat base. Possibly damaged at the top. The weight is solid with a whitish grey patina. Lead weights were used throughout a large span of time and were generally easy to manufacture; therefore, they are difficult to date outside of secure archaeological contexts. The weight measures 11.6mm height, 11.9mm diameter at the base and weighs 8.35 grams.

Age uncertain, crudely cast, lead alloy, probable unofficial, trade type weight. Free standing, oval base, conical shape with flat apex and no suspension loop, but there is a small central, circular, dimple/recess at the base. Stable white/pale grey patina but a number of scratches and dents probably from agricultural machinery. This has an unknown date from Roman period to Post medieval (43-1799AD). Ref. A lead alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date. The object is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It has a large central circular perforation with an internal diameter of 9mm. The weight is undecorated. The opposite face of the object is flat and undecorated. The object has a mid-greyish white patina and is worn. Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1100-1500AD. The diameter is 23mm and …

A complete cast, Post Medieval lead-alloy weight. AD 1600-1800. The weight is conical with a domed crown from which the body gently tapers to a flat base which has a small circular indentation. The weight was formed by pouring molten lead into a thimble casing then allowing it to cool. Concentric pits are present around the top of the object and from these indentations of incised lines follow a spiral pattern around the circumference of the body to the base. Although this object has been described as a weight, it may also be a gaming piece. It is greenish grey in colour. The weight is…

A cast copper alloy Roman weight which may have functioned as a small spindle whorl AD.50-450. This is a biconvex ring weight with a raised band running around the waist of the object. There is some pitting around the ring's outer surface from corrosion during deposition, the object has a dark green patina. This object likely formed the weight for a spindle, though copper alloy rings of this type could have a number of different functions. The weight measures 21.1mm diameter, 8.2mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 10.48 grams.

An incomplete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is conical and is formed by a filled sheet metal wrap. The top is missing showing a small hollow. The rest of the object is solid with an uneven circular base. The sheet metal of the wrap has diagonal line down the side probably caused by the lead splitting. The weight has a greyish brown patina. The weight stands 49.4mm high, is 38.9mm in diameter at its base, and weighs 171 grams. Lead weights are very hard to accurately date due to their wide use…

A complete cast lead-alloy spindle whorl or weight dating to the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, c. 1200-1700 AD. In plan view the weight is circular and plano-convex in section with a domed top and a flattened base. The shape of the weight is rather irregular, with one side standing slightly higher than the other. In the centre of the object, a circular aperture is visible. The weight survives in relatively good condition, with an even brownish patina covering most of its surfaces. A complete lead standing or hanging weight, probably dating to the medieval or post-medieval periods, c. 1200-1700. The body of the weight is sub-trapezoidal, thinning slightly towards its top before abruptly thinning to form a protruding tab which is broadly rectangular in cross-section. Through this latter a small circular perforation has been crudely drilled in order to allow the weight to be suspended. On the base of the weight two rather wide opposing grooves, their function uncertain, while the main body of the weight has been decorated with a series of irregularly spaced longit…

A complete cast lead-alloy standing or hanging weight of uncertain date, probably Roman to Post Medieval, c. 43-1700 AD. The weight is roughly bell shaped, with a thick ridge at its top (though no aperture for suspension) and a prominent dimple in its base. The object is relatively well made, and survives in good condition with a patchy whitish brown patina. The lack of a perforation or aperture in the pre-prepared suspension area suggests that this weight may not have been finished properly, or possibly only existed in order to make the piece easier to pick up. The weight stands 29.4…

The weight is of a rectangular cuboid shape, with a rectangular cross-sectioned suspension bar on the upper face with a small circular suspension hole running parallel to the upper face and a semi-circular impression directly above the hole on the outer surface of the suspension bar, possibly indicating where the suspension element wrapped around the bar. An incomplete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight, probably of Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight is missing its upper end with suspension element, exposing a hollow conical weight body and the base of an iron shaft, which would have run through the vertical centre of the weight. The base of the weight is rounded and would not have been used for resting the weight as in standing weights. The remains of the weight measure 61.93 mm high, 32.62 mm wide (at base), 29.08 mm thick (at base); it weighs 193 grams.

A small lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of probable medieval or post-medieval date. The weight is slightly damaged at the apex however it does not appear to have had a suspension loop. A potential alternative use for a pyramidal object of this size and shape is a gaming piece potentially of early-medieval date, but weights of this size and shape are known and is a more likely use. Also the weight of the object is just under one ounce, supporting the suggestion of a weight rather than gaming piece. Compare NARC-3328B4 and page 33 of Biggs and Withers. It is probably Medieval or Po…
