Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead bell-shaped object, possibly a weight of uncertain Roman to post-medieval date range. The object is of simple straight-sided shape with a small circular suspension loop extending from the upper end. Both sides have been crushed together. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded. Because the object is made from lead it is unlikely to have actually functioned as a bell. Although lead bells were produced in the medieval period at Canterbury as pilgrim souvenirs (e.g. LON-806D1C, KENT-EC8680, LON-C82858 and LEIC-6F1903) the patina and crude form of this example may …

A complete lead and copper alloy weight of possible early medieval date The object is formed from a disc of lead with a rectangular piece of copper alloy set into one face and a small trapzoidal piece of copper alloy set into the other. It is slightly misshapen and the surface of the lead is hevaily corroded. Lead weights with copper alloy mounts or coins impressed into them are a feature of the 9th to 10th century AD. This example may be an imitation of more elaborate weights of this period although it lacks diagnostic features that would confirm this. See also a similar example r…

Lead object, possibly a weight, in the form of a human head of post medieval to modern date. The object is oblong with rounded corners and is D-shaped in cross-section. The reverse is flat. The obverse exhibits a moulded face comprising a bulbous nose with a depression on either side indicating eyes. Below are a pair of full lips. A complete cast copper-alloy trade weight dating to the late Medieval or early Post-Medieval period, c. 1495-1549. It is circular, with a single grooved circle and central dimple decorating its outer face. Just below the latter, a crowned lombardic 'h' has been stamped, denoting either Henry VII or Henry VIII. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 21.71mm in diameter, 2.86mm thick, and weighs 6.79 g. Biggs (1992, 48-9) suggests that trade weights stamped with this motif date to between 1495-1549. The stamp probably denotes an official indication that the …

A cast lead weight, probably a steelyard weight of Roman date. It is oval in form and section with very worn and corroded surfaces. At the centre of top and bottom of the weight are the remains of iron corrosion that probably indicate the presence of a now incomplete suspension loop. The entire object measures 41.16mm in length, 38.17mm in width, 28.84mm in thickness, and 187.73g in weight. This is probably a worn Roman steelyard weight, c.1st to 4th centuries AD.

A Post Medieval copper alloy weight, dating AD1714-1820. The weight is circular in shape with a circular recess on one side forming a raised rim. The sides taper slightly to the base. On the front of the object there is a central small depression with a circular engraved line surrounding it, indicating the design was produced using a compass. There are four stamps on the object: The sword (city of London), the ewer (the company of Founders), a capital A (follwoing the "averdupois" measurement system) and a crowned G (George I-III, AD 1714-1820). A cast lead weight, possibly a steelyard or similar weight. It is hemispherical in form with unevenly cast surfaces. Through the centre of the weight extends an incomplete iron loop or hook that is rectanular in form and square in section, perhaps formed from a nail or similar item. The entire object measures 38.94mm in diameter, 24.85mm in height, and 115.24g in weight. It may be of any date from the Roman period onward, with a date range in the Medieval or later periods most plausible.

A lead and silver gilt object, probably a weight, of late Saxon date. It is formed from a lead body that is square in form and rectangular in section, relatively well-preserved although with some signs of post-depositional damage. Set into the upper surface is a decorative silver gilt mount, which is square in form with a raised rim that surrounds chip carved and gilded interlaced decoration of Insular Art style. This comprises a large central circular boss with circular collar surrounded by a chip carved circular border. Between this inner border and a similar square border positioned…

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The object is circular and perforated with a wide hole in the centre. This hole appears slightly worn at one side suggesting that the object was suspended at some point. One face is very damaged and distorted. It could possibly have been used as a spindle whorl, but seems too irregularly shaped to have functioned correctly. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to Modern period. See PAS record LEIC-210888 from Leicestershire for a similar example. A complete lead Roman to post-medieval pan weight. It is roughly disc-shaped with a raised rim around the circumference of both faces. One face has a faint incised cross in the centre. The other face is very pitted and uneven, but appears to be undecorated. All of the surfaces have been heavily worn producing a shiny patina and there is some damage and corrosion in places. Egan (2005, 163, fig.160, no.838) illustrates a very similar excavations from excavation in London, found in a context dated c.AD 1630-50. Weights like this were in use from the Roman period onwards, however. …

A complete lead medieval to post-medieval weight, possibly an apothacaries weight. It is a flat and almost square is shape, although slightly distorted. A crude mark formed from lines, possibly a letter 'W', has been scratched on one face. Withers and Withers (1995, 65) illustrate a similar example, also with a letter W on one surface, which they list as an apothecaries' weight. A similar example has been recorded on the PAS database from Sussex: SUR-D85EA7.
