Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk

A lead weight which is conical in shape and has an incomplete iron loop projecting from its tapering terminal. It measures 55.00mm in height and has a base diameter of 36.31mm, and a weight of 317.32g. This weight is Roman to post medieval in date, the presence of an iron loop may mean it is at the earlier end of this date range.

A complete lead / lead alloy weight or spindle whorl probably dating to the medieval to post medieval period.
The object is circular in form with a rounded edge, the base is flat. It is undecorated and has a large central perforation measuring 7.18mm in diameter. The object has a light cream patina.
Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards. It is unclear what the original mass of the weigh…

An incomplete lead and iron steelyard weight of possible Roman date. It is sub-ovoid in shape with the remains of a corroded iron rod passed through the centre. There is damage and distortion to both ends and the surface is corroded and scratched.
Although steelyard weights were in use from the Roman to post-medieval periods, examples like this one, with a central rod extending from both ends are thought to be primarily of Roman date.

A lead Roman to Post Medieval weight, dating to AD 43-1800. It is a conical weight with a rounded apex in which an iron loop has been inserted and sealed with lead alloy still visible on the base of the weight. The sides of the weight have traces of iron corrosion as well as scratches and dentings.
Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to Post Medieval times and numerous weight-related functions are likely, perhaps as a steelyard weight, standing weight, net weight or fishing weight.

A complete lead medieval or post-medieval weight or spindle-whorl. It has a flat base and domed, eight-sided outer face. There is a wide circular hole through the centre, which sits slightly off-centre. The surface of the metal is corroded.
The object is more likely to have functioned as a weight than a spindle whorl as irregular in shape. Due to its simple form only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested.

A complete lead standing weight of uncertain date. The weight is rectangular cuboid shape, becoming slightly wider towards the flat base. There is a small integral suspension loop attached to the apex. The surface of the metal is corroded.
Because of the undiagnostic (and often home made) nature of weights like this one, only a broad Roman to post-medieval date range can be suggested.

A cast lead weight, probably a steelyard weight of Roman date. It is oval in form and section with very worn and corroded surfaces. At the centre of top and bottom of the weight are the remains of iron corrosion that probably indicate the presence of a now incomplete suspension loop. The entire object measures 41.16mm in length, 38.17mm in width, 28.84mm in thickness, and 187.73g in weight. This is probably a worn Roman steelyard weight, c.1st to 4th centuries AD.

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. It is circular in shape with rounded outer edges on both faces and is perforated with a circular hole in the centre. This hole appears slightly worn at one side suggesting that the object was suspended at some point. It could possibly have been used as a spindle whorl, but seems too irregularly shaped to have functioned correctly. It is worn and corroded. Because it lacks diagnostic features it could therefore easily date from the Roman to Modern period.

A composite lead and copper alloy weight probably of Roman or Medieval date. The weight is roughly ovoid in shape, but very crudely made. There is a strip of copper alloy folded in two embedded in the centre. Both end of this protrude from the weight for c.1.5cm and one is pierced with a small, circular hole and the other has a small knop extending from the end. An example with a similar construction from the PAS database: LIN-687B15.

An incomplete lead steelyard weight of probable Roman date. It is missing the majority of the suspension loop due to old breaks, now worn.
It is conical in form with a rounded base. The remains of the iron suspension loop is visible at both top and bottom of the weight.
This weight measures 29.73mm in length, 26.39mm in diameter, 61.95g in weight
This is a steelyard weight of probable Roman date, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely. There is a similar example from Colchester (Crummy, 1983, p. 101, no. 2510) and recorded on the PAS database (SF-FB8D63).
