Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead Roman to Post Medieval weight, dating to AD 43-1800. It is a conical weight with a rounded apex in which an iron loop has been inserted and sealed with lead alloy still visible on the base of the weight. The sides of the weight have traces of iron corrosion as well as scratches and dentings. Weights such as this have been used from Roman through to Post Medieval times and numerous weight-related functions are likely, perhaps as a steelyard weight, standing weight, net weight or fishing weight. Close examples are NLM-ADDC7B, NARC-1D2E44, Diameter: 27.28 mm Height: 44.43 mm

An iron core in copper-alloy casing Early Medieval weight, dating to AD 850-1066. It is spherical with two opposite flat faces. One face has a circular sunken line decorated with a series of punched annulets; the opposite flat face might have had the same decoration, but the iron corrosion has burts through the copper-alloy coating and covers large part of the surface.
