A complete lead weight for a pump seal from the Modern period (AD1800-1900). A cast sub-rectangular plate with one rounded edge with a recessed lug on one side, which would pass through a leather sheet of thickness circa 4-12mm, now mainly lost but with some fragments still around the lug,to assure a watertight seal.  Manually operated pumps were employed for engineering tasks in the Humber region from the 17th century onwards, and for drainage and agrarian purposes. This component may derive from a mechanical or motorised version of more recent date. There are ot…

An incomplete lead alloy weight of probable Post-Medieval date (AD 1500-1900). The object is sub-oval, with slightly flattened base and apex, and areas of pitting and multiple depressions. There is a single central perforation which runs through the object: at the apex of the object the perforation is a small sub-rectangular slit (c.6.16mm x 2.1mm); at the base of the object the perforation is spherical (c.5.54mm in diameter). There appears to be traces of whatever was inserted through the object visible at the circular basal perforation (iron?). The object is mid grey with …

A stamped, copper alloy apothecary's weight dating from the post-Medieval period. The weight is roughly square and flat with a reddish-brown patina. It is stamped on one side with the traditional symbol for a drachm, with a numeral in script followed by the unit, whilst the reverse is blank. The weight measures 13.56mm by 14.16mm and weighs 3.0g. Biggs suggests that this type of weight derives from the 17th - mid 19th century. A similar object can be seen on the database at NMS-1C6275. N.Biggs 'English Weights: an illustrated survey"

A complete large lead shield-shaped trade weight of Medieval to post-Medieval date AD 1350-1600. The weight is sub-triangular with a raised shield on the front. The shield itself is decorated with a crowned double fleur-de-lys with the crown extending to the top edge. The design appears to be of poor quality compared with other examples. The reverse is flat and undecorated and shows signs of scarring. There are also scars on the lower, outer edges, possibly plough damage. The weight has a light cream patina throughout. The weight measures 95.54mm in length, is 66.92mm wide at the t…

A cast lead steelyard weight dating to the Medieval-Post Medieval periods. The object is cone shaped and undecorated, although the surface has been pitted from general wear and tear. At the top of the cone is a break where a suspension loop would have probably been attached. It weighs 200+g and measures 51.67mm in height and the base of the object is 34.28mm in diameter. Examples of this type of weight can be found in Bailey, G. (1993) Detector Finds 2, Greenlight Publishing: 30f.

Cast lead flat Medieval trade weight. It is shield shaped in plan with rounded edges. The front of the weight would have had a fleur-de-lys in relief but this has mostly worn away, leaving only the very tip visible. There are some scratches on both faces, these are most likely plough damage. This is a weight used on scales as there is no sign of an attachment loop.
