A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is nicely made, with a different decoration on each side. One side is decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other, resembling Norse runes (although they are not runes!). The other side is decorated with similar lines criss-crossing each other, but in addition, several dots in relief have been inserted between the lines. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 gr…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and no decoration is visible. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 21.7 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is decorated with several lines of circular dots in relief - one both sides around the central perforation. This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A possible lead alloy weight of unknown date. The object is a rounded rectangular shape with a narrowed centre, making it H shaped in section. The two ends are rounded, but the central shaft has straighter edges. The function of this object is not certain. It weighs 229g which is approximately 8 ounces. It is 30.4mm in diameter and is 27.4mm thick. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. No parallel for this obje…

Lead weight dating to the Roman or Medieval period. The weight is cuboid in shape with an integral suspension loop on the upper surface. Vertical ribs run down three of the long faces, roughly in the centre. The other face is damaged but appears to have also had this decoration, though slightly more off-centre.

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

Lead token or weight. Circular in plan it is bun-shaped, giving a D-shape in cross section. The top surface is decorated with a 6 petalled flower. It is most likely to date to the Medieval or early Post-Medieval period. These types of weight have not been catalogued into a typology and so a more precise date cannot be given.

Lead fishing weight, very similar to LANCUM-6E8B72 which is a lead pendant weight. It has an elongated shape with a pierced hole at the top of the weight by which it can be hung, the centre of the weight on both sides are enlarged, giving it a roughly square cross-section.

A complete cast lead weight of unknown date. The weight is circular in plan with a flat top and base. There are no marks or decoration present on any surface and its shape suggests it was used as a measure. The metal is a light whitish-brown colour and is worn. It weighs 32.9g. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more closely and may date from the Roman to post-medieval period.

Double-conical lead weight with central vertical perforation, 8.8mm wide. The weight is decorated in high-relief on both sides with a zig-zag line, with a pellet in each angle. This kind of lead weight is a very frequent metal-detecting find, especially on ploughed and pasture land. There is some archaeological evidence for these lead weights to have been used as spindle whorls in the 16th/17th century (pers. comm. Dr Kevin Leahy), but has been suggested that they could also have been used as net sinkers, fishing weights or weight for traps at a somewhat later date.

A small, bi-conical perforated lead weight, with a flat top and base. The hole which runs through the centre of the weight has a circular section. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls dating from the post-medieval period, but due to a lack of excavated examples and lack of context this remains uncertain. One hemisphere of the weight is decorated with lines that radiate out from the centre, the other is decorated with a series of pellets. The weight is complete. The lead is a light whitish-grey colour.
