A flat rectangular lead trade weight, 75.0mm long, 38.1mm wide, 17.9mm high, weighing 416.0g. There is a handle formed from a loop of iron wire 14mm by 22mm in the centre of the top and the letter G stamped on it twice, one either side of the handle. This is probably a trade weight from dating from between the early 18th and mid 19th centuries. The stamped letter G is probably intended to reassure people of it's reliability, although I am unaware of the mark, and as a point of interest the weight is approximately 1 1/2 ounces light, assuming it is intended to be a 1 pound weight. A medieval shield-shaped lead trade weight. The top face of the weight has a deep grooved border surviving across the top of the shield and down one side; the other side has the remains of a narrow incised line but nothing as obvious as the groove. The top face has a raised fleur de lys at the foot of the shield, and 2 raised dots at the top in the groove (originally 3? but one obscured by plough damage). The lys design may well have had a crown above the lys, but the top is obscured as there is also an additional panel of lead attached to the top face on the upper part of the shiel…

Medieval lead shield shaped weight, dating to the second half of the 14th century. This type of weight may have been used to weigh cloth and many different examples of this type have been recorded, with different weight denominations. The weight has cast decoration on one side which is a double fleur de lis; the top of the upper lis is just off the top edge of the weight. The reverse of the weight is plain and undecorated. It weighs 13.05g and measures 25.5mm in length, 21mm in width and 4mm in thickness. Similar examples of this type of weight can be seen in ‘Lead Weights – T…

Lead standing weight, probably dating to the late Medieval - post-medieval period. The weight is cone-shaped with an integral handle in the form of a hole through the top of the weight. The weight has a slightly concave base and several deep grooves, possibly where it has been hit by the plough whilst in the groud. The mass of the weight is 179g and it measures 49.13mm in length and 28.1mm in diameter (across the base). Standing weights made of lead were still used in relatively recent times but their use was made illegal after 1834.

Conical lead weight with a rounded top. It is possible that this weight is not a standing weight but may be some type of line weight as it has a central circular perforation running right through the length of the object. The base is slightly hollowed out, possibly done to adjust the mass. It weighs 225g and measures 34.2mm in length and 36.46mm in diameter across the base.

Roughly octagonal cast weight, probably dating to the medieval – post-medieval period. The weight does not have a handle but has a hole pierced in both the top and bottom (this does not appear to run through the length of the object). The function is unclear. The object weighs 424g and measures 54.87mm in length and 40.2mm in diameter (across the base). A similar example can be seen in ‘Lead Weights – The David Rogers Collection’ by Biggs & Withers, page 32; Figs. 72 & 74.

A cast lead weight, probably a trade weight. Probably originally a flat disc the edge has been cut off. There is a central stamp mark of 3 parallel lines inside a circular border, presumably referring to 3 units of whatever the measure was (ounces?). If it is a trade weight it probably dates from between the late medieval period and the late eighteenth century (after which even provincial weights started to be made in brass until lead was outlawed in the 1830s).

Probably a cast copper alloy trade weight. The weight is a flat disc, stamped on one side with 4 swords, the numeral 8 over the letter S (alternatively the numeral 3 under the letter S?) and the number 20. On the other side there is a stamped V or A at one edge. The sword stamp (the sword of St Paul) is common on 17th/18th century trade weights as the mark of the City of London Guildhall. However there is usually only one, in conjuction with the ewer mark of the Founders Company, a royal cipher and the letter (for Averdepois, the measurement system). It seems probable though that thi…

Medieval lead weight. It has a rectangular base and a hole in the top part for an iron rod or small hook to pass through. Since it has no official markings, it is most probably a home-made steelyard weight. These are fairly difficult to date since they were used all through the medieval ages.

A complete cast lead weight, probably dating to the later medieval period. The weight is shield shaped. Its upper surface is plain but marginally grooved. The underside of the weight is stamped with a 'T' shape. It measures 59mm in length, 51mm in width and 10mm thick. It weighs 190g. A discussion relating to shield-shaped weights is published in Biggs, N and Withers, P. 2000.
