A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle…

A possible lead alloy weight of unknown date. The object is a rounded rectangular shape with a narrowed centre, making it H shaped in section. The two ends are rounded, but the central shaft has straighter edges. The function of this object is not certain. It weighs 229g which is approximately 8 ounces. It is 30.4mm in diameter and is 27.4mm thick. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. No parallel for this obje…

A lead alloy perforated weight, probably a medieval fishing weight. The weight is 58.2mm long, 20.3mm wide and 17.7mm thick. It weighs 68.3g. It is square with concave sides in section and tapers at both ends. One end extends into a simple oval suspension loop. The weight is deeply patinated and is a creamy white colour. Lead weights are very imperfectly understood currently. It is hoped that by recording them as often as possible, a large body of data that can be studied will be built up.

A lead alloy shield shaped weight from the medieval period. The weight is 43mm long, 33.5mm wide and 8.8mm thick. It weighs 68.5g or 2.4oz. This weight does not seem to fit into any of the known systems of measurements, but could be based on a special weight system with which we are not familiar. The weight is a flat triangular plaque with a raised central area on the front, upon which is the design of a fleur-de-lis in relief. This is a common design for this type of weight. It is similar to several weights in “Lead Weights – The David Rogers Collection” (2000) by Biggs and With…

A cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a medieval or post-medieval fishing weight, though this attribution is uncertain as the weight cannot be dated. The weight is flat and tapers slightly, being wider at the bottom than the top. The bottom of the weight has rounded corners and there is a crudely punched oval hole at the narrow end, from which the weight was suspended. It is 39mm in length, 16.5mm wide and 4.5mm thick. It weighs 18.72gm.

A lead-alloy weight set with a silver pendant.
Description: The weight consists of a drop-shaped piece of tin-lead alloy, flattened at the ends and set on top with a silver pendant in the form of a convex, bearded man's head with a moustache; length, 28.0 mm. The hair and beard are indicated by more or less vertical grooves. The suspension loop of the pendant is broken off and there are traces of gilding in the grooves and hollows of the decoration. A beaded vertical rib above the man's nose gives a helmet-like appearance to the hair. There is a plug of tin/lead alloy in the centre…

A crudely cast, circular lead weight, probably home-made. One side is flat and unmarked, the other has a slightly raised rim with some incised markings, though it is not clear what these are and they may be accidental damage. They are possibly "D" and "8". It is 37.1mm long, 29.8mm wide, and 14.6mm thick. It weighs 42.29 grams (1.5 oz.). The weight is possibly medieval.

A cast lead alloy weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, (1100-1700). The object is circular in plan with a shiny yellow patina and uneven surface. On one face of the object there is a small projecting piece of iron in the centre. This may have been a suspension loop. The sides of the weight are straight, but the upper corner is faceted. Similar objects are LVPL-329CA4 and LEIC-F28C35. The object weighs 1.37oz.

A cast lead alloy weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, (1066-1700). The object is circular in plan with a yellow patina missing in some places, and uneven surface. Projecting from the centre of bioth faces is a small plug of another non-ferrous metal. This may have been a suspension loop. The sides of the weight are straight. Similar objects are LVPL-329CA4 and LEIC-F28C35. The object weighs 0.64oz.

A complete cast lead shield-shaped trade weight, dating from between 1200 - 1800AD. It is 40.6mm long, 32.1mm wide and 7.8mm thick. It weighs 47.84gm (1.7oz). The obverse is decorated with a raised design that looks like a smaller shield although the curve present in the middle of this suggests it could have been a fleur-de-lis. The reverse is flat (although slightly warped) with no visible markings or decoration. The current weight of 1.7 oz suggests it would have been used as a 2oz weight. Similar weights are discussed in Lead Weights by Biggs and Withers.

A lead alloy trade weight probably originally an 8oz weight, but now half an ounce short (212g). It is a rounded shield shape with a raised rim, and the design of a crowned fleur on the front face. There is an iron plug in the centre of the reverse. This was probably to adjust the weight to get it exactly right. There are many shield shaped weights on the database and in Lead Weights by Biggs and Withers. They are normally assumed to be Medieval in date.

A complete Medieval cast copper-alloy cup weight belong to nested set (dating from 1100-1400). This weight is circular in plan. Its sides, 3.8mm in thickness, flare evenly upwards from the base to a flat undecorated rim. The base is broadly flat but is uneven in places and near the edge is a small stamped mark in the shape of a letter R. Inside the cup the base is obscured by corrosion. The inner and outer faces of the walls have a two pairs of circumferential grooves forming decoration. This weight has a shiny green patina. Height: 26.66; diameter: 42.11mm. Weight: 105g. In r…

A cast, copper alloy, bi-face bullion weight, dating from 1700-1853AD. The weight is roughly square and is rectangular in section. All four edges are slightly bevelled and carry file marks. Each side is marked with four small annulets, one in each corner, and a central cartouche bearing the design of a lion. The four annulets indicate that this is a four pennyweight bullion weight, though at 5.78gm it is slightly below the 6,24gm (96 grains) of the standard weight. (Note: the pennyweight ceased to be a legal measure for bullion in 1853). The weight has a light brown patina. It is 15.3…

A lead alloy probable perforated weight. It is tear drop shaped in plan, and D shaped in section. It may have been formed by pouring lead into the bowl of a spoon. A small suspension hole has been made where the stem would have been, but the hole is now damaged. It has a length of 63.40mm, width 41.68mm, thickness 12.75mm, weight 181.18g or 6.4oz. Another crude weight apparently cast in a spoon is KENT-0EF490. A medieval or post medieval date is most likely.

An Early Medieval circular lead weight with a copper alloy stud embedded in the top. There are several Viking weights known that have an earlier piece of metalwork, often with insular decoration, reused by setting into the top of the weight. This example is a circular stud with a raised rim and a moulded central triskele design of three S shaped moulded swirls all springing from a central circle. The central circular cell is empty, but the other areas of the field are decorated with concentric curved triangular panels, with beading in the centre of each. There are slight traces of the…

A shield shaped lead alloy weight, probably dating from c. 1400-1600. This weight has been over stamped and the only remaining part of the original design is a shallowly inscribed groove running around the edge of the weight. The over stamping takes the form of a crown, beneath which are the letters G R / V, suggesting that this weight was re-approved for use at least as late as the reign of George I (1714-27), and possibly as late as 1797. It is 39.4mm long, 32.8mm wide and 12.4mm thick. It weighs 108.14gm (3.81 oz.) so was probably intended to be a 4oz weight. Reference: Biggs & Wit…

A lead disc of uncertain date and function. It has a diameter of 40.74mm, thickness 4.19mm, weight 37.66g. The front is decorated with a central raised small circular boss surrounded by 10 sub triangular or petal shaped pieces radiating outwards. They are surrounded by a raised line which forms a border between the design and a border legend. The inscription reads: "[E]DWARD (SCARBROUGHE ANG)". The reverse of the disc is plain. There is damage to two areas of the edge, opposite each other, so there is a slight possibility that there was originally attachment points in these places.
