A cast lead perforated artefact, probably a small line weight of Post medieval to modern date, AD 1500 - 1900. It has a superficial resemblance to an Early Medieval gamining piece dating from about AD 800 - 900, but these are not usually perforated. It is sub-conical in form, with a flat base rising to a rounded apex. There is a small, perforation slightly off centre at the top opening into a larger, sub-conical cavity in the centre of the base. The weight has a light grey patina. It is 14.9mm in diameter and 10.4mm high. It weighs…

A cast lead, sub-circular, probable weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1800. The object is circular and flat on one face with the other face being domed (convex and uneven. On the the flat side there are signs of a tiny central hole. It has a light grey patina. The object is 28.5mm in diameter, 7.9mm thick and weighs 36.83g. This mass does not conform with any of the standard weighing systems and may therefore be a weight for adding mass rather than measuring. It could also have been used as a gaming piece or counter or a palm guard (thimble).

A small lead object, probably a weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date AD 1400 - 1600. The object is square, flat, and rectangular in cross section with chamfered edges. The surfaces are smooth and flat, with no distinctive markings on either of the square faces, except for a possible cross saltire on the smaller face. The fabric is light grey in colour. Dimensions: length 9.8mm, thickness 4.3mm, weight 3.35g. The mass suggests it could be intended as a drachm weight, though it is worn and under weight for a mass intended to be 3.89g. See Biggs (1994) Apothercaries&nbs…

A discoid copper alloy (brass) stacking weight of 6.47g (0.23 oz), so probably intended as a quarter ounce weight, dating from AD 1700 - 1900. The weight is circular, has a wide raised rim and a recessed centre.  The rim has an incised central line on the upper surface.  In recessed centre there is an incised circle with concentric striations around it. There is possibly a stamped mark, but it is illegible. The reverse is flat with a central circular indentation that may indicate finishing on a lathe. There are transverse file marks and scratches across th…

A worn, and roughly cast cast lead suspended weight probably dating from the Medieval period to Modern periods, about AD 1200 - 1950. It is roughly semi-circular with a large suspension loop projecting from the apex of the arch. The suspension loop is a rectangular tab and has a circular hole through it. The hole has wear at the top, showing the weight was suspended or hung. The lower semi-circular part is not as thick as the suspension loop. The surfaces are rough and uneven. The object has an overall mid/dark grey patina. The mass of 676g approximates to 1 and a half pounds. Dimensi…

A cast lead sub-circular probable weight in the form of a thick disc with carinated sides, probably dating from the Medieval or Post medieval period, about AD 1200 - 1800. One face is flat and the other is concave. An area of damage on the side leaves a scraped grey patch with no patina. The object has a diameter of 32.9mm, a thickness of 18.3mm and weighs 129.51g. This mass does not correspond closely to any standard system of weight measurement. However, weights were constructed for local purposes, or for uses other than measurement - for example, to add mass or to weight something down.

A cast lead standing and perforated weight of pyramid shape probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1100-1800. It is roughly square in section, which tapers evenly towards the top. The weight has a small perforation (2.2mm in diameter) through the top and this shows signs of wear, probably the hanging point for suspension. The weight has a light grey patina. The object has a height of 38.7mm, a width of 13.0mm narrowing to 7.4mm, and weighs 38.5g. This mass does not correspond closely to any standard. However, weights were constructed for other purposes, o…

A lead probable weight of discoidal form, probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1350-1800. It is circular with one flat face and one slightly convex face. The object is lightly patinated, with a light grey colour. There is some damage to the sides but this is irregular and unlikely to be any form of decoration. It has a diameter of 38.4mm, a thickness of 5.8mm, and weighs 62.76g. This mass (2.2oz) does not obviously correspond with a standard system, although weights might be constructed for specific and local purposes and measurements. Equally it c…

A squat conical lead weight of uncertain date, Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1800. The base is oval and has a slight central depression where the metal has shrunk during cooling. The sides are irregular, concave in some places and convex in others, but forming a wide and flat cone with a rounded apex. The surface has no visible intentional markings but is pitted. It has a white patina. Dimensions; length 37.8mm, width 33.3mm, height 17. mm, weight 86.45g. The mass is similar to a quarter of a Roman libra (82g) allowing for some possible damage, and to a quarter o…

A small lead cylindrical object, possibly a weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. It could also be a fixing (rawl plug) or a metal item into stone. It is a tapering cylinder, apparently broken at the narrower end. The wider end is flat, with a narrow grove 2mm from the edge on the end surface, and a sub-circular 4.7mm indentation at the centre. This is filled with white corrosin. It could be for a suspension loop or similar, or be where the object to be mounted was held if it is a fixing. The sides are smooth and the opposing end is rough and raised on one side. It has a light grey pa…

A circular lead possible weight of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. The weight is a thick disc which is slightly convex on one face, and slightly dished on the other but with an extra area of added lead forming a raised triangular shape. It has a light grey patina. It is 52.8mm in diameter, 13.3mm thick and weighs 265g. The mass does not seem to fit comfortable into any standard system of weighing, so it is possible that it is an ingot of lead, formed into a cake shape for ease of storage, or that it has another unknown function.

A perforated lead disc, possibly a weight or a token, of uncertain date, probably Medieval or Post Medieval, AD 1200 - 1800. The disc is sub-circular and uniface. One face has an incised border groove, and possible further decoration within it, but this is worn and indistinct. There is a sub-circular perforation at the centre, but the hole is too small to allow use as a spindle whorl. It could be a token that has been cancelled, or a weight for measuring (the mass is roughly close to a half ounce), but is most likely to be a weight for adding mass, to a line or net for example. D…

A complete lead suspension weight of medieval to Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1200 – 1900. The weight is sub-triangular with tapering rectangular section and a circular perforation through the narrower end. It appears undecorated though some scratch marks are present. The weight of the object does not directly correspond to English weight systems of this period though the form sees parallels in object such as SWYOR-89DFDB. It may therefore be a weight of a non-specific mass designed to make something heavier. The metal has a light brown/white patina and is worn. The object i…

A Medieval lead weight, possibly a trade weight, dating from AD 1200 - 1500. It is broadly shield shaped lead alloy weight with rounded corners. It has a raised ridge around the perimeter on both faces, which is unusual. There are faint markings in the centre of the upper face but it is not clear whether these are a moulded design as is often seen on trade weights, or post-depositional damage. The reverse is rough and marked probably due to wear. The weight has a mass of 228g suggesting it was intended to be used as an eight ounce (half pound) weight. The weight has a patchy brown and…

A solid lead hemisphere, perhaps a weight, of uncertain date, probably Medieval to post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. There is a slight depression in the flat face where the lead has cooled after casting. It is 25.9mm diameter, 10.8mm thick and 40g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standardised weight system, so it is possible that the object is a custom made weight, a weight for adding mass instead of measuring, or an ingot for convenient transport or storage of the lead.

A lead weight, probably Medieval, dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. It is triangular, with a raised border on one face. This face is also decorated with a design in shallow relief, perhaps a crown over a fleur de lis, but it is not clear whetrh there is one motif or two. The design has a round raised area in the centre of the shortest side, and a rounded rectangular raised area in each corner flanking it, then these three areas are joined by stems forming a V shape. Damge in the centre means the bottom of the possible crown cannot be seen. The decoration continues below, with the thre…

A lead weight of uncertain date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. It is a circular disc, slightly recessed on one face. It has a blocked central hole of 5.3mm diameter. There are four pieces of iron embedded in the weight, at the four cardinal points. Only one is clearly visible, the others being below the surface. The weight has a well developed cream patina. It is 48.7mm diameter, 17.4mm thick and at 259g, it does not fit easily into any standard system of weighing. It may instead be designed to add mass to a rope or net, or act as a counterweight.
