A barrel-shaped lead weight or steelyard weight with a hole along the centre of the long axis, of unknown date, Roman to Post Medieval, AD 43 - 1900. It is circular in cross-section and tapers at each end, terminating in flat faces (now damaged). There is no evidence of an iron hook, but the hole is full of soil. It is 29.7mm long and 25.3mm in diameter. It weighs 100g. If the weight had a loop in the hole, it could have been a hanging weight or steelyard weight, perhaps of four ounces or 1/4lb or 1/3 libra. Alternatively, it could be a net sinker - a…

A complete lead / lead alloy standing weight dating from the medieval period onwards (c.AD 1100-1700). The weight is conical in shape with a flat, circular base. At the apex the weight narrows and flattens longitudinally, and presents a loop of wire. The object has a powdery light grey patina. Dimensions: Length 41.1mm; diameter (base) 25.5mm; width (top) 11.2mm; thickness (top) 10.3mm; weight 97.28g Weights can be hard to date due to being a functional item that has not altered significantly over time. Biggs and Withers (2000) note that standing weights made of lead were still used…

A lead pan weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1280 - 1800. It is octofoil, or circular but scalloped into eight lobes in plan, and the upper face is convex or domed. The lower face is essentially flat, with a slight central depression. There are no markings or decoration. It is 54.2mm diameter, 26.9mm thick and 447g. The mass is broadly equal to 1lb, closest to the Imperial standard (so perhaps from the later end of the date range given) but also close to the Mercantile and Avoirdupois systems used from about AD 1280 onwards. No close parallel has been identified on th…

An incomplete cast lead and iron cylinder, probably a suspension weight of Medieval or Post medieval date, around AD 1280 - 1800. It is an irregular cylinder which stands on an angle, and has a piece of iron embedded down the centre, perhaps originally a suspension loop. The sides of the cylinder have six flutes of an original seven surviving, some longer than others. These are U shaped grooves running longitudinally along the cylinder. A complete, cast lead-alloy discoidal possible weight or perhaps a large token of probable Medieval to Modern date about AD 1300-1800. The disc has one irregular face and one smooth face, but no obvious decoration or markings. The diameter is 29.1mm, the thickness is 3.8mm, and the weight is 20.33g. This mass does not fit obviously into any standard system of weighing. It could be a weight for a singular specific purpose, or it could be a large token.

There is a circular perforation through the narrow end.  The object is 45.2mm long, 32.2mm wide and 10.7mm thick.  It weighs 86.78 grams, which is the equivalent of 3 ounces Imperial, and close to the official mass of a quater pound in the Tower system (87.5g). A conical lead weight of unknown date, about Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1900. It has a flat base and a rounded apex with sides that taper to the top. There is a small, sub-circular depression in the base and an iron suspension loop set into the apex. It is 25.1mm in diameter at the base and 39.2mm high. It weighs 120.4g. The mass suggests that it is a quarter pound weight, and it would be closest to the Mercantile system of 16ouces of 29.2g (116.6g). The good condition of the iron loop might make a date later in the given range more likely. It is also poss…
