Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A sub-triangular, cast lead perforated artefact, probably a weight, dating from the Post Medieval period, AD 1600 - 1900. It is flat in profile, and sub-triangular in plan, with curved sides and rounded corners. The edges are bevelled. The reverse is pitted, perhaps from the casting process. The narrow end is perforated with an irregular hole of 3-5mm diameter. The weight is 41.9mm long, 23.9mm wide and 5.9mm thick. It weighs 36.4g. The mass does not obviously fit into standard units of measurement, but the weight may have been used to add mass, such as a line or net weight.

A spherical, cast lead perforated artefact of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1800, probably used as a weight. The hole is wider at one end than the other (4.4mm diameter to 2.7mm diameter). It is 14.6mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. It weighs 15.5g (0.54oz). It is slightly over mass to be a half ounce weight (which should be 14.1g), though it could be a half ounce in the Apothecaries' system. It is often suggested that objects of this shape are beads or net or line weights for fishing or birding.

An incomplete lead alloy trade weight dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods. AD 1280 - 1800. It is shield shaped and the front is decorated with a moulded double fleur design on a raised plinth. The weight has a yellow grey patina with areas of wear. The top edge is probably a cut of patinated sheer break. The top of the fleur design is missing, and the mass is too heavy for a 2 ounce weight and not enough for a 4 ounce weight. It is probably an incomplete 4oz weight. Similar examples can be found in Lead Weights; the David Rogers Collection on page 40 (Biggs and …

A discoid, cast lead weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, about AD 1280 - 1700. It is circular in plan, with one flat face and one face that is domed but truncated with a smaller flat face. There is no decoration nor any marks. It is 31.1mm in diameter and 8.7mm thick. It weighs 55g (1.93oz). It has a grey patina. It was probably intended as a two ounce weight in the Imperial, Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems of weight measurement (Egan, 1998, page 302).

A spherical lead probable weight with a hole through the centre, of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1300 - 1800. It is slightly flattened at each end. There is no evidence of an iron hook, but the hole is open and has a perforation of 4.0mm diameter. The weight has a light grey patina and the surface is pitted in places. It is 18.6mm in diameter. It weighs 29.49g.
The mass of 29.49g suggests that it is intended as a 1oz weight in either the Mercantile, Tower or Apothecaries systems of measurement. Alternatively it could be a weight threaded int…

A cast lead alloy weight, dating to the later medieval or post-medieval period (about AD 1380-1500). The object is shield shaped in plan, with flat sides and base. The upper face is decorated with a fleur de lis in relief. The weight has a light grey patina. Measurements are; length 22.4mm, width 15.1mm, thickness 5.9mm and weight 14.04g. It was probably intended as a half ounce weight.
Shield-shaped weights are a distinctive group of trade weights which are used from about AD 1380 and continue into the 15th century. Biggs & Withers (2000, p.34) …

A small lead perforated weight of probably Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1700. It is a sub-conical weight with a small circular hole from apex to centre of base. Measurements are; length 13.7mm, diameter at the base 17.2mm and weight 17.81g. There is a hole running through the length of the object which is 1.6mm in diameter. The mass could, allowing for a missing suspension loop, be inetded to represent 12 pennyweight in the English Troy system (18.7g) which was in use from the 1350s.

A cast lead conical object, probably a weight from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, AD 1200 - 1700. The weight is broadly conical in shape but has six uneven sides. On the base is inscribed some marks. They appear to read 7112 with horizontal curved lines above. They were probably intended to have a different meaning. The object has a cream patina and there is no evidence of a suspension loop. The measurements are length 18.17mm, height 23.91mm, width 16.5mm and weight 31.68g. The reverse is flat and the patina is light grey. The weight is 417g and may have been intended to be used as a 1 pound (1lb) weight. It is closest to the nominal mass of a 1lb weight in the Avoirdupois system of measurement in use from before AD 1280. (Egan, 1998, page 302, table 14). A circular cast lead probable weight, probably from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, around AD 1100 - 1800. It is sub-circular and has two flat faces both with raised rims. There are no visible markings or evidence of attachment. The weight has a mass a little under to 1/4lb (4 ounces) in the English Troy system but could also have been used to add mass rather than measure mass, or be a four ounce weight in another system which has lost some mass.
The diameter is 37.5mm, thickness 10.1mm, and weight is 91.18g

A cast lead artefact, probably a weight, of probable post-Medieval date, about AD 1500 - 1800. It is roughly cylindrical in form with an oval flat end, and sides that taper to a blunt, rounded apex. There are two circular, domes of brown corrosion set side by side in the centre of the flat end. They appear to be ferrous, but they do not give a magnetic response. The weight is 16.8mm long, 16mm wide and 28.6mm high. It weighs 39.1g. The mass does not fit obviously into any standard system of weight measurement, so it was probably intended to add mass, such as …

A sub-spherical, cast lead object of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900, possibly a perforated weight, a bead, or a spindle whorl. The object is sub-spherical. The ends are flat and there is a central, longitudinal perforation with an internal diameter of 6.5mm. The external dimensions are 16.7mm in diameter and 16.8mm long. It weighs 16.34g. Objects of this shape are often suggested to be weights for adding mass, such as net sinkers, fishing weights or to weigh down birding nets or snares. A similar example is SWYOR-C70703.
