A spherical, cast lead perforated artefact of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post medieval, AD 1200 - 1800, probably used as a weight. The hole is wider at one end than the other (4.4mm diameter to 2.7mm diameter). It is 14.6mm in diameter and 12.5mm thick. It  weighs 15.5g (0.54oz). It is slightly over mass to be a half ounce weight (which should be 14.1g), though it could be a half ounce in the Apothecaries' system. It is often suggested that objects of this shape are beads or net or line weights for fishing or birding.

Late Medieval to early Post Medieval lead alloy shield shaped pan weight. Equates to 60 drams or 3.7 ounces (almost 4 ounces or quarter a pound) under the ‘binary’ averdepois system. The decorated side consists of a crowned fleur-de-lis, surrounded by a recessed border approximately 5mm lower than the decorated area. The border is largely absent from the top edge of the weight. The weight is lightly abraded and the decoration is still clearly visible. Dates to between c1390 and c1588 AD. Length 48mm, width 37mm, thickness 11mm, weight 105.35g. The weight illustrated on p4…

A spherical lead probable weight with a hole through the centre, of unknown date, probably Medieval to Post Medieval, AD 1300 - 1800. It is slightly flattened at each end. There is no evidence of an iron hook, but the hole is open and has a perforation of 4.0mm diameter. The weight has a light grey patina and the surface is pitted in places. It is 18.6mm in diameter. It weighs 29.49g. The mass of 29.49g suggests that it is intended as a 1oz weight in either the Mercantile, Tower or Apothecaries systems of measurement. Alternatively it could be a weight threaded int…

A lead probable weight of medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1350 - 1700. It is a circular disc with rounded sides and one face is recessed in the centre. It has no visible markings. One face has suffered a recent deep scrape. The mass of 46.2g is close to 1/8 of a Troy pound, but this may be coincidental, as the weight does not look to be particularly well made. It may have been used to add mass to weight something down rather than for measuring. It is 34.1mm diameter and 7.4mm thick.

A lead flat rectangular probable weight of Medieval to Post medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1600. It is slightly irregular, with rounded or chapmfered corners, and both faces appear to be plain. At a mass of 12.4g, this could be a weight for eight pennyweights in the English Troy system. Similar but "hide" shaped weights are known from London (Egan, 1998, page 318 - 321). It is 23.4mm long, 20.6mm wide and 3.2mm thick. 12.4g.

A worn square or lozenge shaped, cast lead trade weight dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1500, or perhaps later. The perimeter of the weight is thicker than the centre of the faces. The weight is 40.99mm long, 39.67mm wide and 9.55mm thick. It weighs 105.57g. The weight has a light grey patina. Square w…

There is a circular indentation in the centre at both the top and the bottom of the weight. It has a white patina. 22.7mm diameter, 10.7mm thick central hole 5.5mm by 4.5mm. 30.3g. Although at first glance, it looks like a spindle whorl, the off-centre hole means it would not spin evenly, and makes this use unlikely. The mass of 30.3g is close to a Troy ounce or an apothecaries' ounce of 31.1g (Egan, 1998, page 302), so use as a weight is suggested.

A cast lead standing weight or suspension weight, probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1250-1800. The object is conical in form, with a flat base, rounded apex and tapering sides. It has the remains of an iron loop for suspension at the apex. It has a height of 43.7mm and a basal diameter of 29.4mm, and weighs 170.66g. Allowing for the additional weight of an iron loop, it may have been a half pound weight (1/2lb) in either the Tower system (12 ounces of 29.2g) or the Troy system (12 ounces of 31.1g) (Egan, 1998, The Medieval Household, page 302). The w…

A complete discoidal lead weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, about AD 1300-1800. There are no identifying marks on either side of the weight, which has a light grey patina. One side of the object has been slightly flattened and burred over, probably post-depositionally. The diameter is 26.9mm, the thickness is 4.9mm and the weight is 27.8g. This mass corresponds reasonably closely with that of one ounce (1 oz) under the avoirdupois system (28.4g), or eighteen pennyweight (18 dwt) which would equate to 28.08g (Egan 2010, p. 302).

A circular lead weight possibly a pan weight probably dating from the medieval to post medieval period, about AD 1250 - 1800. It has a concave centre on both faces, and rounded sides The surface is flaking, suggesting it may have lost some mass. It is therefore possible it was intended to be a two ounce (2oz) weight. The diameter is 22.2mm, the thickness is 13.9mm and the weight is 42.87g.

A complete lead-alloy conical weight of uncertain date, though probably medieval to Post-Medieval, c.AD 1100 - 1750. The weight has a flat circular base and rounded top with a central circular perforation running through it. The surface of the weight is undecorated. The metal has a light brown patina and is worn. The weight is 19.2mm tall, 22.1mm in diameter at the base and weighs 40.3g. The perforation is 3.9mm in diameter. The term 'weight' is used here in its broadest sense to include uses that do not involve weighing (e.g. holding-down, tensioning, etc.). They were commonly …

A lead weight of probable Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1800. It is a circular standing weight with straight but angled sides, an uneven base and a flat top with small irregular depressions on it. There are no discernable markings. It has a well developed yellow / cream patina. It is 29.3mm diameter, 20.9mm tall and110.6g. The mass is about equal to 4oz in the Mercantile or Avoirdupois systems (116.6g or 113.4g), so it may have been intended as a quarter pound weight. See Egan (1998) The Medieval Household page 302.
