A copper alloy and lead object, possibly a weight or gaming piece dating to the late Saxon period. The object consists of slightly curved rectangular section piece of lead. The lead has a flat strip of copper alloy inset in its upper surface. The strip of copper alloy is also slightly curved and is decorated with a moulded pattern of swirl and triangle with a ribbed border. The object measures 29mm in length, 21mm in width and has a thickness of 18mm.

Lead Viking weight dating from the late 9th - early 10th century. The weight is circular with a flat base and top; the sides taper slightly from the base to the top giving an overall truncated conical shape. The weight has a copper decorated flat copper alloy mount in the top surface known as a single strike Pressbletch mount. The mount has approximately a quarter missing where it has either worn or broken away. The mount is very thin and may have been pressed over a pre-moulded surface on the weight. Cast lead weight with decorated and gilt copper alloy fragment embedded in the lead. The object comprises a sub-rectangular lead base, sub-rectangular in section. The face has a piece of carved and gilded copper alloy embedded in it; this piece appears to have been both shaped and cut, though the egdes are largely enveloped by the lead. The decoration comprises asymmetric scrollwork; it does not appear to be zoomorphic in nature but rather non-figurative, intricate pointed knots. A small cast lead weight. The weight has rounded edges and the base has had lead removed from it, presumably to make it the correct weight for weighing. Into the top of the weight a styca coin has been pressed. The coin is not identifiable. The lead is a light greyish-brown colour. A similar weight can be seen in Pirie, p282. This weight is in the Yorkshire Museum's collection.

A lead-alloy weight set with a silver pendant. Description: The weight consists of a drop-shaped piece of tin-lead alloy, flattened at the ends and set on top with a silver pendant in the form of a convex, bearded man's head with a moustache; length, 28.0 mm. The hair and beard are indicated by more or less vertical grooves. The suspension loop of the pendant is broken off and there are traces of gilding in the grooves and hollows of the decoration. Cast lead weight with a copper alloy plate on the upper face, Early Medieval in date. It is circular in plan and stands 17.23mm high. The base is lead and is plain. The decorative plate on the upper face is copper alloy. It has a raised central circle which has an incised six petalled flower in the centre. The outer edge is sextfoil in shape with a small lobe in between each lobe. Each lobe has a sub-circular perforation in its centre through which the lead of the base protrudes. There are several Viking weights known that have an earlier piece of metalwork, often with insular decoration, reused by setting into the top of the weight. A fragment of cast metalwork from the Early Medieval period, probably dating from the 6th century. The fragment is sub-square. Three of the edges are broken; the complete one is dark brown but the broken edges are white. The front is decorated with chip carved triple strand interlace with a plain border on the complete edge. The back of the fragment is not gilded. It has a dark patina round the edge, but a much lighter white and green colouration in the centre. The object is a flat disk with four integrally cast triangular lozenges and a single central circular pellet. The reverse is smooth and undecorated. The broad date has been applied to this object as the identifier has not seen the object and such weights of similar form continued to be used through to the Post-medieval period. A complete cast copper alloy barrel shaped weight of Roman/Early Byzantine date (AD 200-450). The weight has integrally cast lettering on its upper end, I B which equates to half a Roman ounce (a semunicia or half unica) weighing 13.6g. Other examples are known to have inlay in the lettering which is absent in this example. The current thinking in terms of dating for such weights places them in the period AD 200-450 (Entwistle 2008. 38-46). A similar example can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Database Unique ID: BH-C5E266.
