Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950 Length: 24.0mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 9.3mm, Weight: 23.22gms

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a pinched apex with drilled hole for suspension, flat-based, patinated. A flat base would permit use as a standing weight in a scale pan. The approximate mass of this object recurs amongst lead weights of other forms from medieval London; its correspondence with the values of early medieval weights is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter, while the finder kindly suggests a Roman date and a function as a steelyard poise. The apical hole could also permit use as a line weight, also a probably medieval usage. Suggested…

Copper alloy and lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edge and raised rim, perhaps part of a nested set. It appears a central drilled hole of diameter 5.1mm was filled with lead in an attempt to amend or correct – the original casting has a small chip at its edge and is heavily worn – the mass of a weight representing one averdepois ounce. Copper alloy possible weight. Cast trapezoid flat-sided weight. The mass is near-equivalent to a single unit of 4.43gms as is thought to have governed silver bullion transactions in areas under Danish Viking control. Almost all the weights hitherto considered to relate to this system are made of lead, and most represent multiple units, though there is no reason why other materials could not be put to the same use. Lead weight. Cast sub-discoid flat-sided disc with suggestion of a rim on either side, patinated. Form and surface condition could suggest a Roman date. However, the mass equates almost exactly with three Viking Age units of 4.07gms, as are thought to have been used in areas under Danish Viking influence to govern transactions in silver bullion, and perhaps for a period thereafter where such practices had become established. A weight made in the [then] familiar style of a Roman weight but observing Viking weights and measures might point to Anglo-Saxon involvement in its fabrication. S…

Lead weight. Cast cylindrical lead weight, the regular form indicating it was cast in a closed mould, patinated. The metal retains a greyish tint suggesting a relatively recent date. The mass initially suggested a possible correspondence with Viking-Age units of measurement with a possible value of two ora/ore [the contemporary and underweight version of an ounce] but the surface condition and construction may both argue against such an early date while the correspondence with round numbers of such units is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Lead possible fishing weight. Cast object of lentoid form and plano-convex section, which has been cast in a shallow oval hollow with a smooth surface leaving a series of fine concentric lines on its convex surface. This might have been a cuttlefish bone, a material also thought to have been used to make moulds to cast small objects. This reporter has seen traces of this usage on a silver mount of late medieval date (NLM-6C1202). Cuttlefish bones might equally be used to cast fishing weights, as they would presumably be encountered by fishermen more often than by other folk. Scratched,…

Lead weight. A sub-conical weight made in two distinct stages. Initially, a fragment of cast lead sheet of thickness 2.3mm was tightly rolled. The metal of this component is patinated where it appears in the rounded base. The roll was then dipped into molten lead or placed in a larger mould which was filled with eutectic metal. The jacketing layer is not markedly patinated, though patches of white fabric may represent either protrusion of the rolled core or a surface which has been lost elsewhere, the former deemed the more likely. Lead hem weight. Cast disc with a sunken panel of diameter 7.2mm on one side, and a pair of stitching holes at the same position on the other side. Patinated and worn with a rounded edge. The object type remains in use and manufacture, but this is a larger and massier example of a manufactured weight than would be sold today. Its condition also argues against a particularly recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850 Diameter: 32mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 30.62gms
