Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy probable weight. Cast basin-shaped weight from a nesting set, with circumferentially incised lines within and without and a deeper groove around the base of its wall which may arise from working on a lathe. The mass does not immediately suggest which system of measurement this object observes, which may itself hint at a specialist usage. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1550-1700. Diameter: 25.8mm, Height: 18.6mm, Thickness (wall): 1.2mm, Weight: 12.65gms

Lead weight. A flat-sided weight cut from thick cast sheet, and subsequently pierced with a central hole of diameter c.2mm. Lightly patinated. The mass might suggest this to have been a weight representing one [slightly underweight] half averdepois ounce. The slightly eccentric form may suggest the halving with an obliquely angled cut of a larger rectangular object. The piercing may signal its subsequent conversion to use as a fishing line weight. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1750. Length: 18.4mm, Width: 15.1mm, Thickness: 7.3mm, Weight: 13.88gms

County: North Lincolnshire

Lead weight. A cast conical weight with a slightly sunken flat base which may suggest casting in an open mould. An off-centre conical pit in the base, of depth c.15mm, may arise from the presence of a handle to facilitate lifting the object from the mould. Fiercely abraded and patinated overall. The mass may suggest this to have been a standing weight representing one half of a libra, or Roman pound (327.5gms). Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Diameter: 36.9mm, Height: 30.5mm, Weight: 162.48gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid hem weight with a sunken central circular panel on one side in which two holes for stitched attachment appear. Lightly patinated, and fiercely abraded with dented edges. Impressions of a closely woven textile appear where the fabric weighted has left its imprint on dented patches. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Diameter: 24.5mm, Thickness: 3.7mm, Weight: 16.42gms

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid rimmed weight from a nesting set; a doubled incised line on its upper rimmed side and a central pit on its flat base indicate the object was finished on a lathe. The mass might suggest this represented an [underweight] quarter of an ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Diameter: 19.6mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 6.55gms

Lead weight. Cast triangular section weight of a centrally swollen lentoid form with a pierced aperture at one end. Dimples on its flat side may suggest this was cast in an open mould; patinated overall. Similar weights from Mytongate, Hull (Evans, D.H. [ed.] 1993, East Riding Archaeologist Vol. 4, Hull Old Town Reports Series no.2, Excavations in Hull 1975-1976, page 168 plate 11) were dated to the 14th century. These would presumably have been used with a fishing line. Suggested date: Medieval, 1300-1400. Length: 36.6mm, Width: 14.5mm, Thickness: 10.1mm, Weight: 24.12gms

Lead weight. Cast plano-convex or conical weight, probably made in an open mould, and with a central rectangular hole of width c.4mm, possibly from using a nail shank to lift the casting from the mould. The metal retains its fresh grey tint overall, suggesting a recent date. The mass may suggest this to have represented one quarter of an averdepois pound. The use of lead for a weight in recent times would be appropriate to domestic uses rather than a commercial setting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Lead weight. Cast annular weight with one deep and at least two lighter nicks in its band. The metal retains its grey tint, suggesting a recent date, or perhaps recent disturbance from a sealed context. Probably for a fishing line. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Lead weight. Cast shield-shaped weight with a flat base to the shield, and with a deeply incised line delineating a border on one side. Patinated, and subsequently dented and lightly bent. The mass may suggest this to represent one [underweight] quarter of a pound. This object is thinner and flimsier than the medieval class of shield-shaped weights, though its form may consciously imitate them. There is no discernible trace of an armorial blazon, either real or contrived. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Height: 56.0mm, Width: 39.7mm, Thickness: 7.1mm, Weight: 100.27gms

Lead weight. Cast shield-shaped flat-sided weight with a prominent rim and Arms modelled in relief: the upper half of the shield bears a saltire with a pellet in each angle; the lower part bears a possibly cruciform figure, though this may be a misreading of a more complex if poorly rendered motif. This probably represents one slightly underweight quarter of an averdepois pound. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 45.2mm, Width: 33.7mm, Thickness: 10.8mm, Weight: 111.67gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with nine protruding ribs equidistantly paced around a rim which stands slightly proud of an indented surface, the lowermost as the object was cast. A light steel staple is embedded in the upper surface, possibly to help with the extraction of the object from its mould. Patinated. The mass might suggest this to represent an underweight quarter of an averdepois pound. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 38.6mm, Thickness: 12mm, Weight: 111.06gms

Lead weight. A cast flat-sided oval weight with a probably moulded aperture of diameter 8mm at its narrower end. The object is smooth and lipped on one side, possibly the uppermost in an open mould. The other side bears slight irregularities, possibly to be resolved as a T-shaped figure moulded in low relief, though recently damaged. Patinated. Probably a substantial fishing weight, as might be used for coastal rather than river angling. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Length: 49mm, Width: 38mm, Thickness: 8.5mm, Weight: 99.12gms

Iron probable weight. A straight-sided cast iron block with one straight and one curved end. A round hole of diameter 14.8mm appears set centrally, towards the curved end. A slot of length and width c.9mm abuts the hole and confers the appearance of a key hole. The object was at first taken to be a padlock, but is solid with no provision for a lock mechanism. It may be that the configuration of the hole was intended to permit a locking bar to pass through the hole, which would seem apt for the attachment of weights to agricultural machinery. The best indication if date is afforded …

Lead weight fragment. Cast flat-sided sub-rectangular weight, possibly originally shield-shaped and cut down to a smller approximation of the same form. A moulded panel on one side presents an open crown with tall central fleur flanked by heart-shaped jewels above another motif, now truncated. This was possibly an arched crown or a compressed lis, all within a sunken panel. The letters B / E S rendered as modern style capitals and a detached horizontal slit are stamped into the reverse; the letters recur in more crowded format on one side edge. The opposite side edge bears fine scrat…
