Dimples on its flat side may suggest this was cast in an open mould; patinated overall. Similar weights from Mytongate, Hull (Evans, D.H. Iron probable weight. A straight-sided cast iron block with one straight and one curved end. A round hole of diameter 14.8mm appears set centrally, towards the curved end. A slot of length and width c.9mm abuts the hole and confers the appearance of a key hole. The object was at first taken to be a padlock, but is solid with no provision for a lock mechanism. It may be that the configuration of the hole was intended to permit a locking bar to pass through the hole, which would seem apt for the attachment of weights to agricultural machinery.
