Copper alloy and lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edge and raised rim, perhaps part of a nested set. It appears a central drilled hole of diameter 5.1mm was filled with lead in an attempt to amend or correct – the original casting has a small chip at its edge and is heavily worn – the mass of a weight representing one averdepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Diameter: 33.2mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 27.07gms

Lead weight. A small pellet of solidified lead melt which has set on a flat surface, with drilled hole of diameter 2.2mm, countersunk on one side, presumably to permit use as a fishing line weight. The grey tint of the metal points to its recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950 Width: 14.2mm, Thickness: 3mm, Weight: 2.89gms

Lead hem weight. Cast disc with two slightly off-centre drilled stitching holes. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its recent date; the tidier examples may be very recent as these objects are still sold to craft enthusiasts. Lead pump seal weight. Cast D-shaped plate with bevelled edges and a projecting fungiform lug with facetted beaten end on its underside, of a form superficially resembling that of a detached shoe heel. The lug engaged with a slot in an oiled leather seal [lost] for a pump chamber during its operation, to maintain the vacuum necessary for its functioning. Lightly patinated. This is a small version of a relatively common object class marking the processes of rural land drainage. The grey tint of metal may suggest this to be relatively recent in date, though the technology of manually ope…

Lead possible line weight. A small oval lump formed by the rolling of a scrap of cast lead sheet of thickness c.2mm into a tight roll, presumably around a fishing line; patinated. The form and mass bear comparison to that of the larger end of the range of split lead shot used by modern anglers. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900 Length: 10.1mm, Diameter: 8.2mm, Weight: 3.35gms

Lead flower arranging weight. A cast frog or weighted base for a floral arrangement. A cast fungiform object with a wide stalk and an overhanging concavo-convex top in which are pierced about sixteen round holes, mostly set around the edge. Patinated and squashed. Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with canted sides and a central pit which may suggest finishing on a lathe; the base bears diagonally crossing file marks. The latter may relate to the final finishing of the object, whose mass suggests it is intended to represent one drachm [3.42gms]. An S-shaped mark appears on inside of the flat-based bowl of the weight. Though the drachm was a unit of Roman origin, the form and condition of this object suggest its more recent use, probably in a nesting set of pharmaceutical weights. Lead hem weight. Cast disc with a sunken panel of diameter 7.2mm on one side, and a pair of stitching holes at the same position on the other side. Patinated and worn with a rounded edge. The object type remains in use and manufacture, but this is a larger and massier example of a manufactured weight than would be sold today. Its condition also argues against a particularly recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850 Diameter: 32mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 30.62gms

Lead weight. Pump seal weight. A cast sub-rectangular plate with a waisted conical boss or lug on its underside; the boss retains relicts of an oiled leather diaphragm sealing the chamber of a water pump in the recess of its waist. Lightly patinated with dents and a cut arising from the forceful adjustment of the seal. Manually operated water pumps were used in the course of 17th-century and later engineering works in low-lying places, and latterly for agricultural land drainage when they might run on mechanical power. Lead weight. Cast pump seal weight. A thick slightly concavo-convex sub-discoid plate – one straight edge appears – with a central waisted lug on its convex side. The lug would engage with a hole in the oiled leather seal of a pump chamber, enabling the weight to reassure its watertight fit. Patinated, with cut marks from a bladed tool used to adjust the weight’s position or drive it into place. Probably used for land drainage with a pump which might be either manually or mechanically powered, the former perhaps more likely given its modest size. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1…

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid rimmed weight from a nesting set, finished on a lathe which has left a central pit on the underside. Four inspection stamps remain in the concave surface: the letter W below a cushion crown; a dagger; the letter A; and a quatrefoil. The W may refer to William III (1694-1702), the dagger to the City of London, under Charles II (1660-1685), and the A might by the same token refer to Queen Anne (1702-1714) (cf. Biggs and Withers 2000, Lead Weights, Norwich Series, 61-66). The mass suggests the weight represented two averdepois ounces. Suggested date: Pos…

Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled rim, from a nesting set. A shield appears stamped in the base of the cup, with rounded shapes suggesting a floral pattern around it. Diagonal file marks appear on the underside. The mass suggests this to have represented one quarter of an averdepois ounce. Sets of weights were made in Nuremburg, establishing a common post-medieval form. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Diameter: 18.7mm, Height: 5.1mm, Weight: 7.06gms

Lead flywheel. Plain cast cylindrical weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 17.2mm; patinated. The form resembles that of the smaller cylindrical spindle whorls, but the greater mass suggests a different use, perhaps as an adjunct to hand-powered machinery of the post-medieval period. Lead weight. Sub-rectangular billet of cast lead sheet with cut edges; stamped on one side with an heraldic shield bearing an uncertain charge – a cross and a flattened M may figure – with the rounded edges of other devices in three corners around the top and side of the shield. The form resembles that of a coin weight, though lead would not be the obvious material for weights intended to check large denomination coins.
