A lump of lead whose function or use is uncertain. This unidentified object is also of uncertain date. It weighs 42.19g, and currently has a sub-spherical to sub-cuboid form. Lead is a heavy but soft metal and it is therefore more probable that this artefact started as a sphere and has deformed to gain flatter sides under its own weight. Only one of the surfaces appears markedly different to the others. This has a depressed slot around less than half of the circumference. The slot has a width of 1.9mm and depth of 0.7mm. The diameter of the lump, measured along the axi…

A late medieval or post-Medieval lead shield-shaped lead weight. The outer face is decorated with three upwards-pointing transverse chevrons. The surface of the metal is corroded and there is damage in places.  Biggs and Withers (2000, p.34-6) suggest that shield-shaped lead weights were introduced in the second half of the 14th century AD and remained in use as late as the 17th, 18th and even 19th centuries. Length: 39.03mm, width: 37.30mm, thickness: 6.56mm, weight: 49.05g

A complete lead quatrefoil-shaped weight of probable medieval to early post-medieval date. The object is a flattened quatrefoil-shaped. Its outer face has a raised lozenge-shaped in the centre, its corners extending to the outer edges of the object and its outer face decorated with a raised fleur-de-lis. The outer face of each corner lobe is then decorated with three raised pellets and a raised linear border around its outer each. Similar examples can be found in Biggs and Withers (2000, 49, nos.154&155) who describe these as goldsmith's weights. See PAS records…

A complete lead spindle whorl or weight dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1200-1700). The object is circular with flat faces and a rounded edge. In the centre is a circular perforation measuring 8.9mm in diameter. The object is undecorated and has a powdery white / cream patina. Dimensions: Diameter 25.3mm; thickness 5.1mm; weight 20g Weights found outside of secure archaeological contexts such as these are difficult to date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most examples likely date from the medieval period onwards…

A lead artefact of uncertain date. This is probably a weight to weigh goods with but may have been used as a small plumb-bob or weight to tension a cord or material instead. Weight is 22.63g (0.80oz) and length is 31.5mm. The cross-section appears to be circular but close inspection shows the sides to be subtly faceted. Some of the facets are much more subtle than others which frustrates counting the total number. At the wider end the diameter is c.9.4mm. c.3.7mm from this terminal the diameter has flared out to 15.2mm. It then contracts gradually to 8.6mm diameter c.2.4mm before the o…

A conical lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 54.19g (1.91oz) and has a height of 20.6mm. In profile the weight has a trapezoidal shape and a sub-circular cross-section of c.23.0mm diameter at the base tapering to 17.8mm at the top. A perforation passes through the approximate centre of the weight on the height axis. At the flat base of the weight this opening is oval 4.7mm x 3.9mm. At the irregular but mostly flat top the opening is not open but blocked, possibly with a mix of pale brown soil and or rusted iron, possibly with some lead from the slig…

A biconical lead weight. Weights of this form are generally thought to be Roman but the date is uncertain as these can be found on multi-period sites. The weight has a biconical profile and sub-circular shape when viewed from above or below, probably originally circular but now miss-shapen. The remains of an iron attachment loop or some other means of suspension are present in the miss-shapen apex end. In its current condition the weight has a height of 35.2mm including the iron remains. The original diameter, on the well preserved axis, is 42.7mm and on the miss-shapen …

A conical weight of unknown date. Weight is 12.40g (0.44oz), the diameter at base is 19.6mm from which the walls taper to 7.1mm at the top. Height is 9.0mm. A straight walled cylindrical hole of 3.9mm diameter passes through the approximate centre of the artefact vertically (from flat base to tapered top). This is more likely to have been used as a weight for weighing how heavy something was, rather than as a spindle whorl.

A copper-alloy discoidal trade weight, weighing 6.69g (0.24oz). This artefact is circular in shape with a diameter of 20.5mm at the base. The walls flare out slightly giving a diameter of 21.3mm at the top. Viewed in profile the artefact's cross-section appears initially to be rectangular rather than the actual subtle inverted isosceles trapezium. The walls give the object a maximum height or thickness of 3.7mm. The centre of the upper surface is recessed by 1.9mm, the edge of the artefact forming a 1.8mm wide undecorated rim. The inner edge of the rim slants diagonally from t…

A complete copper alloy Trade Weight of Post Medieval date (AD 1600-1900). The object is a 1 ounce stacking trade weight. The weight is discoidal with a raised rim, and a central n ring-and-dot within a double circle, used to hold the weight while it was being ground. The weight has a stamped laver or coffee pot, the inspection mark of the Worshipful Company of Founders, who controlled the lawful making of brass weights in London and for three miles around (Withers and Withers 2011, page 78). Post Medieval lead alloy bell shaped weight. It appears to have been cast in a mould made by the first joint of someone's thumb, the faint imprint of the nail still being visible. Possibly an incomplete suspended weight that was originally intended to have some form of trapped loop in a perforation that was never started. Alternatively it may always have been intended as a standing weight, possibly for a scale pan. Probably dates to between c1540 and c1900 AD. The height is 39mm, diameter is 24mm, and the weight 132.98g.

Lead Medieval to Post Medieval uniface hexagonal possible merchant's weight. The flan is flat and appears regular and complete with no signs of edge breaks that may suggest it was part of an alnage seal. There is a slightly raised border within which is a 'mark of four' merchants mark. The mark consists of a closed Arabic number '4' with the extended horizontal bar crossed at right angles to form a cross, whilst the base of the upright is set at the central apex of a letter 'W'. The trade or trader that the mark aligns to is unknown, but as a trade weight it is very light at 1.47g, or…

It has a flattened oval end measuring 28.1mm x 26.4mm and a length of 27.8mm. From the flattened end the artefact tapers to a rounded dome. The external surface of the dome is undecorated but covered with some grooves and pitted dents, the result of slight damage. The domed shape somewhat resembles a thimble or Medieval bee-hive.
