A lead suspension weight of probably Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. It is sub-triangular in plan, trapezoid in cross-section and is perforated with a square hole at the narrow end. The front face is worn. Measurements are; length 90.3mm, width 38.7mm, thickness 13.6mm and weight 300g. The mass is close to the official mass of 1 Roman libra (327.5g), suggesting a Roman date, though the form is not typical for the Roman period. A later date cannot be ruled out.

Lead weight. A small cast sub-cylindrical lead weight with a step at its mid-point and a tapered round-topped and drilled loop above the step at its top. The form and provision for suspension might point to use as a steelyard poise – a steelyard weight was reported along with this object – though a flat base would also permit use as a standing or scale pan weight. Patinated. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 15.7mm, Height: 27mm, Weight: 31.96gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an upstanding rim or recess on its upper surface. Dave Haldenby kindly comments that this may leave the date uncertain, as well as the mass if the recess were to indicate the loss of an inserted object. The definition of the form is especially crisp and might open the possibility of a Roman date, perhaps as a [slightly overweight] half uncia, or even as a later half ounce under the averdepois system. The present mass does not suggest close correspondence with suspected Viking Age systems of measurement. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diame…
